Another thread reminded me...my very southern neighbor always brings over a dish of black-eyed peas, for luck, she says, on Jan.1
Any tradition where you are?.

(3,487 posts)Having them alone, without hog jowls too, would jinx your New Year.
So we always had jowls too, and collard greens. Damn, now I'm starving but can't get into Pasadena tomorrow to the soul food places .
Happy New Year to all DUers.

(8,075 posts)New Years Day. When I moved to California 30 years ago, it was incumbent on me to do whatever was necessary to get those peas. I don't care if I had to drive to another county, I'd find those peas. Fortunately, the peas are quite easy to find in this day and age. And yes, I'll definitely eat some tomorrow..

(16,387 posts)And it always feels like something is missing. Tomorrow my sister down south will make a big batch of BEPs with ham hocks and throw an open house to dole them out to friends and neighbors. Sparkling wine on the side.

(25,662 posts)Started nibbling at lunch and will soon continue for dinner. The sweet and salty foods really goes well with sake. My husband found a delicious unprocessed local sake. White stuff (lees?) were at the bottom and I didn't exactly shake it, but tipped the bottle back and forth to distribute it and it freaked me out by exploding in a fountain of bubbles like champagne when I opened it. Did not expect such behavior from sake. Live and learn.

(856 posts)I think I overcooked the black eye peas a bit but, despite that, it was still really good. And the recipe made a ton! I have nine more servings in the freezer.
I might have started a new personal tradition.

(4,221 posts)Im from PA Dutch country. Pork and sauerkraut is everywhere today, at big fire hall and church dinners and family tables. I love it. Sometimes I sneak in some black eyed peas just to cover all bases.
