DU Album of the Day: Abba - "Gold"

Today is Bjorn Ulvaeus's birthday. You may be like 'WHO?' but Bjorn Ulvaeus is one quarter of one of the most famous bands ever - ABBA. And let's face it, right after seeing the word ABBA you started humming the song 'Dancing Queen' because let's face it deep down inside in your heart you are 'young and sweet, only seventeen'. Don't you dare deny it it - it's true!

ABBA was once offered $1billion dollars to do a reunion tour. I don't even think the Beatles, Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd had anywhere close to that offer for a reunion tour.

ABBA Gold contains all the greatest hits by ABBA so today in honor of Bjorn Ulvaeus's birthday I'm dedicating today's DUAOTD to him! Happy Birthday!

Here's some music to perk up your day:

Even though they never really got credit for being a good band...too disco some said...but you cannot deny the power of their music to make you remember the song....I especially Fernando.

for decades. Mondo hokey lyrics, fer shur, but the music is structured utterly perfectly, especially that rising modulation in the chorus (it starts on the "you can dance" line) which slays me every time I hear it to this day. Rutger Gunnarsson, ABBA's bass guitarist, is a total and complete monster and he shines on this song - take it from this bass player. I also thought the blonde singer was pretty hot back in the day.

I consider ABBA to be somewhat underrated, musically speaking. The sound was a perfect fusion of Mamas & Papas/girl group vocals with a modernized version of the Spector Wall of Sound. Add hooks that sink into the listener's brain like a harpoon into a whale and there was no way they could not become fabulously successful.

A slightly guilty pleasure, but a pleasure nonetheless.

The only song ABBA ever did that was worth anything was "Fernando," and the ghost of Bea Arthur will haunt anyone who says otherwise. Bonus points if you know what in the hell Bea Arthur has to do with that song.

Is the "Dirty Sanchez" she paints on Dewey's face with the frosting.

I foresee many years in therapy for the kid who played Dewey.

ever. And the timing within the band was like they grew up singing together.
Yes - one of the best.
One of my favorite that I don't hear played much:

I always remark that the only thing Sweden ever contributed to the world was Ikea, Mats Sundin, and Abba: all of which are functional, emotionless and bland! JMHO
