Was Gal Gadot robbed for "Wonder Woman" by the Oscars (TM)?

Last edited Mon Jan 29, 2018, 08:49 PM - Edit history (1)

Here are the nominees for Best Lead Actress

Sally Hawkins, The Shape of Water
Frances McDormand, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
Margot Robbie, I, Tonya
Saoirse Ronan, Lady Bird
Meryl Streep, The Post

Question: Should Gadot have been in that mix?

by the industry, except for the lesser awards, especially special effects. Hollywood looks down its nose at mass-marketed bam!-pow! entertainment, but the studios love the box office they bring in so that they can afford to do "artsy" films that mostly confuse the audience.

Gal Gadot knew that going into this, and I strongly doubt that any actor who takes a part in one of these comic-book movies figures that the future payoff is going to be anything more than paid appearances at Comic-Con.

but, it didn't rise to Best Actress level.

Edited to add - I was more disappointed that the movie didn't snag a Best Picture nomination or Best Director at least.

I don't think Wonder Woman would have been out of place there. Maybe it's not at the level of the very top films, but nobody outside of the MRA would have been outraged if WW was included.

She's a wonderful actress, but she already has 2 Oscars. I prefer that they spread awards around rather than nominating and awarding the same people over and over. A Best Actress or Actor Oscar can really boost a career. Share the wealth.

My money meanwhile is on Sally Hawkins or Saoirse Ronan....

While all the actresses including Meryl Streep are great....these two performances were amazing....

But the award is "Best" not "We need new talent." Maybe the award categories could be changed to reflect some differences, but of course what about ageism?

The thing is that these other wonderful actresses are up against the Best, in the sense that she has reached a pinnacle of her career.

I love Saoirse Ronan but this should be Francis McDermott's year.

She brought an abundance of strength, beauty, and screen presence. WW made a ton of money for a film driven by a female lead.
