Born in 1940, I grew up in OK only hearing 'Gesundheit.' It was only in the 70s and 80s in IA that I began hearing 'Bless you.'
Gesundheit is a German word that translates as health.

(17,485 posts)I also would get
Speak roughly to your little boy
and beat him when he sneezes!
he only does it to annoy,
because he knows it teases!
I guess I usually say bless you or nothing. I do recall being in a meeting in Germany and some one sneezed and I said Gesundheit. They grinned and looked at each other. None of them had said anything.

(32,767 posts)... the correct answer is "Danke schön." (pronounced dahn-ka shuhn) - thank you
The correct answer to that is "Bitte schön." (pronounced bit-te shuhn) - you're welcome

(17,636 posts)...friends and family and I will always offer a Bless You! after a rather hardy sneeze. If my friends are of my own persuasion I tell them to not sneeze on the food.

(25,556 posts)We were taught to say, "Bless you". But I heard "Gesundheit" from friends.
When my husband sneezes, I don't say anything because he sneezes for like 15 minutes. I usually just say, "Thank God that's over with". Then, he starts sneezing again. Then, I respond, "I spoke too soon."

(131,126 posts)Nostrovia is an English mispronunciation of the Russian word Na Zdorovie. Outside of Russia, Na Zdorovie is commonly known as a drinking toast. Na Zdorovie (Naz-dro-vyeh) means You are welcome. Nostrovia is modern slang for let's get drunk and let's drink
Most of my friends and family say 'Bless you.'

(52,328 posts)we agreed that it's silly that it's polite to say something when someone sneezes yet impolite to say something when someone makes other bodily noises.
so we generally say nothing.
sometimes i forget and still say gesundheit.

(426 posts)....sniffling. Very nerve wracking. That's when I yell at him, "get a Kleenex and blow your nose, for God's sake!" Another point of annoyance, he doesn't always cover his mouth. Why? Because he "doesn't want to get it on my hand". So it's OK to share with the rest of the room?!
Other times I say, "well, there's the butter, where's the bread!"

Being nonreligious, I prefer Gezundheit.
