It is ACH debit transactions $100 3 times this week plus a $10 the very first time I already got statements coming in that I have to sign just for getting the money back but 2 more $100 is being taken and I can't stop this person and the bank can't either, I believe I have a stop payment for one which I'm being charged $30 for. I'm going to bank in morning .

I know what an ACH transfer is.

You have to go though a series of steps (rather high security stuff) to set that up to make it work and it is not easy. It is not something that can be set-up overnight, that is for sure. It transfers money between bank accounts at different banks is the idea and it is instant.

I'd be freaked out too!

Is there some way you can close that account out ASAP?

It does not seem right that they are charging you a fee because of this. You are right however, someone has the acct. # and the routing # but as I mentioned, you have to go through a series of security measures to set this up for it to work and YOU would be the one doing it.

Makes me has very little CONfidence in the banking system, esp. with Chase!

I don't get it I must admit. for you!!

I also have direct deposit set up with this account and I'm inexperienced with banking but hopefully I can get another bank somewhere and then move all my money there but I worry about closing it before the DD comes in so I'm wondering if I should keep it open til the first and close it then?

I don't know which is why I can't sleep. I don't know why ACH transfers are happening and why the bank is allowing these transactions and keep happening even after I called them about it. Customer service claims department suggested I close my account because they said Chase is not responsible for any more fraud occurring on my account. This is all very baffling and have no idea how this happened.

Thanks for explaining a little bit what ACH is.

7. I think I would freeze my credit
Sat Feb 17, 2018, 06:39 AM
Feb 2018

That would be a start -- ask the bank and see what they suggest.

I have my bank acct. set-up to move money between two banks via ACH. While it appears to be instant, it still has to be reviewed, etc.

Chase can't say they do not know about this given the above post from the Ripoff Report above.

Sh*t is about all I can say!

If you close the acct. it will no longer work but you have the identity theft thing to worry about.

You can check your credit for free online here:

www.annualcreditreport.com

You can check it once a year at the above site.

There is also creditkarma.com as well, another free site that you can check yourself out at but I'd go with annualcreditreport.com and get the info. with the names/#'s to freeze your credit.

GOOD LUCK!

I'd do the credit check thing first with annualcreditreport.com (save/print).

That site tells you who to contact if you see problems.

To freeze your credit you have to notify 3 agencies, Transunion, Equifax & Experian.

I know one of them wants it in writing and I believe one of them will do it over the phone.

I hope this helps as I am no expert either but I do know what a ACH transfer is and credit monitoring that you can do.

If you do the annualcreditreport.com thing now you will be able to see your credit history any recent attempts to open accts. under your name. However, it is not johnny on the spot up-to-date.

Usually it is behind a bit.

I would definitely get rid of that acct. ASAP & open something elsewhere so at least you can still do your banking!

What a damn hell. I am sorry you are going through this!!

Sat Feb 17, 2018, 07:44 AM

ACH fraud: Why criminals love this con
Fraud involving the Automated Clearing House (ACH—hence the term ACH fraud) Network, which is used by financial institutions to handle direct deposits, checks, bill payments and cash transfers between businesses and individuals, is becoming an increasingly popular way for hackers to siphon money out of the bank accounts of unsuspecting victims.

Fraudsters only need two pieces of information to pull off ACH fraud; a checking account number and a bank routing number. They typically obtain the information with a targeted phishing email that tricks the victim into running malicious software which then allows criminals to install keylogging software and steal bank account passwords.

How pervasive is this crime? According to a report late last year from the FBI, there has been approximately $100 million in attempted losses due to ACH fraud as of October 2009. The FBI reports it is seeing several new victim complaints and cases opened every week.
CSO: What exactly is ACH fraud and how does ACH fraud happen? ACH, of course, stands for Automated Clearing House network. An ACH transaction is an electronic funds transfer between bank accounts using a batch processing system. Simply defined, ACH fraud is any unauthorized funds transfer that occurs in a bank account. ACH fraud, unfortunately, is very easy to execute. All the fraudster needs is an account number and a bank routing number to execute the fraud. In the simplest form, the fraudster uses your bank account and routing numbers to initiate payments for purchases or to pay debt by giving these numbers to the desired vendor.

Deb Geister:

This type of fraud can occur over the phone or through web transactions. More complex ACH fraud, perpetrated by rings, begins with a computer Trojan that fraudsters seek to place on a computer, usually through some type of "phishing" attack launched through email or through an infected website. Once the Trojan is in place, the fraudsters then log keystrokes, looking for logins for bank accounts. They use this information to create their own login and transfer funds out of the accounts or apply payments through the accounts. Many larger schemes use "mules," which are hired accomplices, usually through work-at-home schemes to either knowingly or unknowingly move funds on their behalf, to move the funds to their overseas accounts.https://www.csoonline.com/article/2125833/cyber-attacks-espionage/malware-cybercrime-ach-fraud-why-criminals-love-this-con.html

I am so sorry to read this.

I wonder if reporting this to the police will get Chase off their ass.

I note that it began to occur after you received the pay-off from the VA.

The people that do these sorts of things search for accounts with a lot of money in the I heard.

One thing you can do is open an online savings acct. (I have a Barclay's Savings acct. which pays 1.5% at present). You could transfer your money to your new Barclay's (or wherever) acct. You can make the withdrawal instant (takes abt. one day to occur). At least they cannot get what you transferred out. Link to Barclay's FYI: https://www.banking.barclaysus.com/index.html

Seems your computer may be infected with some sort of a virus?

Have you tried downloading and running malwarebytes on it? Can be downloaded at malwarebytes.com

I'd also do what they suggested - no transactions via a phone it seems. Why a laptop would be any different than a desktop computer baffles me. Perhaps the message is to use a real computer to do online transactions (?).

As for staying with Chase until that check clears ... right ... that is if there is anything left in the acct. after it clears! I don't see WHY they are holding a US gov't (Federal) check for so long as such checks are guaranteed and generally they don't put a hold on them.

I wish there was more I could do for you but I'd ...
#1. Do the self-credit check online on a COMPUTER (no phone)
#2. Check what you find carefully
#3. Use Transunion to report anything & hopefully they'll notify other 2 places
#4. Find another place to bank ASAP
#5. Call the police and tell them you believe you area victim of identify fraud and that you are being robbed and that the bank isn't doing much to help you

I hope this helps.

What-ta mess indeed!!!

I'd still place a fraud alert on your account. As I mentioned in a prior post, it is for 90-days only but ... they are watching and it does not cost anything and will have no effect on your credit rating btw.

They are watching me like a hawk.

I check every month with creditkarma.com . It notifies me if there in any activity at all.

An example is this: I added my husband to my American Express card. They wrote to me telling me that a card was issued to someone in my household apparently and to please check.

It is that sort of thing.

Be sure to keep your eye on everything best you can!

Glad this seems to have worked out for you and try not to worry as it does no good at all.

Take care.

Aspiration is a legitimate banking institution. Not only for Interest-Bearing Checking Account, but also for Investments, small and large. You can make and investments for as little $100! Debit Card with tens of thousands of ATMs. All of this with fees. The author of this complaint has some kind of personal bone to pick, perhaps he was turned down for an account, who knows.

I have an account and Debit Card with Aspiration, so speaking here from the vantage point of a customer. Anybody who has dealt with Aspiration knows better, people who no nothing about this company makes complaints such as this. Not the best financial entity in the world but certainly not as stated in subject complaint.

There is also another issue I deposited my VA disability compensation backpay check last Friday so since the check was so large they put a hold til the 21st but they made all of it available the next day but they gave me a hassle when trying to buy a car over the phone saying I had a $5000 limit but a local branch let me use a Cashiers check so I hope they don't give me a hassle when I try to move all of money into another account before the hold clears the 21at and before my bank account is bled before I can pay the bills.

It is good for 90-days. Not sure what good it really does but it is a layer they have to crack through to get to YOU. You can click of the link for that above under the Transunion info. I posted earlier.

I have one on my own bank accts. because of the Experian hack.

I do not have any problems personally however, just worry abt. the Experian problems.

The credit freeze is a lot more effective. However, if you are going to open new accts. it might stand in your way as it prevents new accts. from being opened. I don't know if this includes you or just the hackers.

Expert here.

You are not liable for more than $50 in losses (zero depending on your financial institution's policy) if you first reported the activity within 60 days of it first appearing on your statement. If you reported it later than that your bank or credit union will make an appeal to the thief's bank, but there is no guarantee you will be reimbursed. As long as you cooperate with your financial institution and honestly complete any forms they provide to you, they can help you.

They could request the information that triggered these debits for you, but the other bank only has to return the funds if they are presented with your Written Statement of Unauthorized Debit (or claim form) by your bank within 60 days of the transaction posting. After that (between 61 days after posting date and two years after posting date), they may provide that data to your bank if they deny the return of funds, but they are under no obligation or threat of penalty if they do not respond. The entire ACH structure and Regulation E is set up so that liability for unauthorized activity is established. There is no mechanism to catch the bad guy or definitively identify the perpetrator.

There is one more step you have to take. Close your account and reopen a new one. Yes, it is a pain in the butt. But it is the only way to stop this particular crook. Should it happen to you again after that, then you can be certain it is most likely someone you know and trust who has access to your banking information. Family members, friends and caregivers are the usual suspects. But with this being tax season there is usually an increase of this activity this time of year traced back to tax preparers.

Good luck getting your money refunded. If you fill out and return the forms your bank provides you and close your account and reopen a new one, you should come out of this only inconvenienced and annoyed. And don't blame your bank. They did not give out your information. They only processed the payment and were required by law to process the ACH instructions as they received them. The merchant is the one who is responsible for obtaining and documenting the proper authorization before they submit payment instructions to the ACH network.

When 2 more happen I said "can you stop Aspiration from pulling money out of my account" they went with a stop payment option for one of the $100 but they would charge me $30 they told me to expect the money Tuesday they said they would block future similar transactions but there was another $100 that wasn't addressed so I called them back and went to the claims department like the first time I called which is different than the stop payment route.

I think I have another statement coming in the mail and a stop payment for one I'm not sure which I don't know why both weren't addressed or not sure if they were I'm not very good taking care of things over the phone but they suggested I close my account.

Closing my account does appear to be my best option. Also what this site recommended.https://www.thebalance.com/unauthorized-transaction-from-my-bank-2386136

Some merchants get around a rejected payment request by resubmitting the payment instructions from a different account on their end or varying the description of their name. Unscrupulous merchants can defraud a lot of people before their bank shuts them down. The blocks your bank puts on are only effective if the merchant is honest.

Got hacked and it would not stop. Had to freeze the account from all activity and hackers actually changed my mailing address and email and were in the middle of using a credit line I did not remember that I had.

The bank returned my money but it was a nightmare. Thank god it was not the bank with my savings, just checking account. I believe they would have taken my savings. I am told I need to report myself to the credit bureaus and this will mean all credit frozen.

Sorry you are living this nightmare.

They are legally obligated to process ACH instructions. The merchant is responsible for having proper authorization and their bank is responsible for making sure their merchants are not committing fraud.

The same situation would happen with a credit union.

is the money even gone? This looks like it was deducted and the reversed back to your account.

Looks like the clearing house processed a transaction and then reversed it. I'd go to Chase and see. I had a problem with an automatic loan payment between my credit union and a major bank. The Clearing House keyed it incorrectly to a transfer demand to my Credit Union acct. so they reversed it. In the end no payment was made. The bank kept denying it until they looked closer and found it was a mistake in keying the transaction. I was stuck having to make the payment in person.

Do you have any auto pays for bills or loans? Something that's a regular type payment.

There is
$10
$100

I got $110 back so far

$100

And that top $100 which is pending that I have a stop payment on. I'm not worried about the $310 I'm worried about the rest of my money.

I have no auto bills set up.

The bottom is the top

is that they are very good about responding to this sort of thing. They don't like getting ripped off either. Get on the phone with them.

They were very helpful in person and I signed a sworn statement and they faxed it and put a stop payment on the pending. I also opened different accounts so hopefully this doesn't happen again in the future.

I appreciate all responses.
