During infield before the game, the second baseman was taking the relay throw from the shortstop and making the turn to throw on to first. Problem was, he'd get to the bag early, jump up in the air to take the shortstop's throw, then turn in mid-air to throw on to first. Very stylish, but he was never on the base while he had the ball.

One of those details you file away in the back of your brain.

Sure enough, along about the third or fourth inning, the batter hits a sharp grounder to short. The runner on first runs toward second but knows he's a dead duck. The second baseman does his little alley-oop catch-and-throw, the batter's out by two steps. I call the runner safe at second, the batter out at first. The second baseman looks at me like I just shot his dog, the runner isn't sure of his status (safe or out?), but stands on second. I make the calls again, safe at second, out at first. I hear the second baseman's coach from the bench, "Dammit Johnny! I told you not to do that in a game!" No further argument or discussion.

Downright hypnotic to watch this over and over.
