questions??I started Appalachian Trail in 2013... got snowed out and then my partner ended up in hospital so I had to get off trail...
March 2018... I'm headed out tomorrow to give it another shot... figured this is a good time since I am driving myself crazy with the madness of politics... I'm giving myself until the end of year to walk the entire 2190.9 miles (will take a break for election time!!)
2013... me on left...
2013 into NC...

(22,757 posts)my hike was almost the same as his... got off in Gatlinburg because I ran into a couple of rangers and they said people were being taken out with hypothermia and I leapfrogged up to PA and hiked a bit before I had to go home to be with partner

A HERETIC I AM
(24,377 posts)Last October I drove up to CT to see my aunt, my moms last surviving sister. From the Hartford area we then went north and west over to Lake George, NY to see an old friend I hadn't seen in 40 years! We passed across the trail several times in western Mass and South Eastern Vermont.
Such incredibly pretty countryside.
Again, one hell of an undertaking and it is my sincere wish you have a safe and enjoyable "Walk in the Woods"

(1,266 posts)I've only hiked (never backpacked) on many portions of the AT in Maine, where I grew up aeons ago. My very favorite peak is the northern terminus of the trail, Baxter Peak on Mount Katahdin, 13 feet shy of one mile high and hosting a spectacular view on a clear day. I hope you make it all the way there safe and sound and strong.

Good luck and enjoy!

(12,875 posts)In mid-late June the mountainside is ablaze with flowering rhododendron. The views are outstanding, and herds of wild ponies roam about the place.
Be safe, endure, and have fun.

(8,291 posts)LOL. I would love the hike, but I need my epsom salt bath after a daily walk like that. I am not a camping type of person at all.
I hope you have a good hike this time and have nothing but peace and quiet. Happy Trails!

(4,940 posts)This old Alaskan's major hiking days are now fond memories. Yours is a "Hike", not just a hike! We'll try to send any rotten weather west instead of east.
Knowing you will have an incredible time, wishing I could go with, and anticipating TONS of pictures!

(34,137 posts)My neighbor completed the Appalachian Trail some years ago. He did it in a bunch of segments and trained by climbing the stairs in the Florida State Capitol Building. At first he had problems with the security people but once they got to know him, they cheered him on. When he had finished, the first time he went back to the capitol to continue his exercise regime, there was a big banner over the stairs congratulating him, signed by hundreds of the state people in the building, including the governor!

Buddy of mine just started on the Trail. He's been hiking and hitching cross-country for over a year, now. His name's Corey H., and I met him and his dog at last Spring's Saguaro Man in Arizona's White Mountains. He expects to reach the end of the Trail this Winter, also.
