I was involved in a hit and run accident a couple of nights ago.

I was driving my tractor-trailer through Columbus, Ohio the other night in a construction zone. There were three lanes there that were narrowed a bit smaller than usual for the construction with retaining walls on both sides. I was riding in the right lane. A driver in what I think was a red Ford Mustang, who was speeding, hit the trailer tandem wheels on the driver's side of my rig. He then got hung up on my trailer bumper for a bit as I was trying to stop. He got free of the bumper, but damage to the right front of his vehicle pulled him into the retaining wall on the right side.

We were just about to come out of the construction zone, so I cleared it and pulled off on the shoulder of the road. I looked back to see the car resting against the retaining wall, then he started to move...and he kept right on going. I watched the car as it went by and it was all torn to hell. The right front end was smashed in, and the entire right side of the car was trashed due to the encounter with the retaining wall. I don't know how the driver was driving the damned thing. It was making a loud screeching noise as he went down the road.

I called the cops and they showed up within a few minutes. Damage to my truck was minimal- just a torn up mud flap and a bent mudflap hanger that was rubbing my trailer wheels that was easily straightened by a road service crew. The collision didn't even pop a tire. I was not cited for anything and sent on my way. I don't know if they caught up to the other driver. The officer on the scene ruled it a hit and skip unsolved.

It was a lesson to me that no matter how well things are going, and how much we think we have control of matters, some things are just out of our control, and things can go very wrong with a quickness even when life seems all warm and fuzzy.

And that the other guy did not appear to be hurt. Maybe he was driving a stolen car. Who knows!
