A HERETIC I AM

Alright...just a fucking second here.......

(Yes, this took 18 years to dawn on me)

The Blue Lagoon;

Two children build a multi level house, with doors, a roof and probably running water before they are 18.

Castaway;

A grown ass man marooned on a similar island lives in a fucking cave for 7 years.

What the ever living fuck?

Motto?

If you have to be marooned on a desert island in the Pacific, do so with Brooke Shields and Christopher Atkins and NOT Tom Hanks, because obviously working for FedEx makes you stupid.

You've got details a little off. He had already returned to the U.S. from Russia.

A Christmas with relatives is interrupted when Chuck is summoned to resolve a problem in Malaysia. While flying through a violent storm, his plane crashes into the Pacific Ocean.

OK...so I remembered it wrong.

BUT STILL!!

Added moral;

Hanks is one fucking treacherous dude to travel with: Apollo 13, etc.

Of course, he has nothing on Brad Pitt.

"Hanks is one fucking treacherous dude to travel with!"

Yeah! And don't forget that he ran all the way across the country ("Forrest Gump&quot , swam underwater without scuba gear ("Splash&quot and landed a plane in the Hudson River ("Sully&quot .

In fact, if I were getting on a plane, ship, bus, car, train or any other form of transportation and I saw Tom Hanks get on... I'm out of there!

First of all, Tom Hanks' character was marooned for four years. During that time, he was able to ascertain a number of things that provided him with a geographical idea of where he was. For example, at one point, when he's in his cave, we see that he has traced the analemma of the sun's trajectory across the sky during a full year. (Wikipedia defines an analemma as "a diagram showing the variation of the position of the Sun in the sky over the course of a year, as viewed at a fixed time of day and from a fixed location on the Earth." ) In effect, it looks kind of like a figure 8 and it clearly tells you what time of the year it is. Every modern globe has this feature on it, usually illustrated somewhere in the Pacific Ocean. It indicates that he is figuring out where he is and where he needs to go to be rescued.

Second, there are several hints early in the film that he has experience as a sailor and navigator. There are sailing pictures in his home and yachting trophies on his bookshelves. (I suspect that there were additional scenes to explain his sailing knowledge but they were probably cut because, who cares?)

Third, working for FedEx may not have affected Hanks' character's survival. However, his dedication to staying alive was buttressed by his commitment to deliver the package with the wings on it. No doubt, this was one reason FedEx was so supportive of the film's production; I think their CEO even makes a cameo appearance near the end of the film. More importantly, if you read the stories of people who have survived shipwrecks, the common theme to their survival is a dedication to something larger than themselves.

"The Blue Lagoon" is a titillating teen flick. I mean, two hotties coming of age all alone on an island! It's a great teenage fantasy! However, it's not particularly realistic and most likely, the two youngsters would have perished along with the person who cared for them as children. In contrast, Hanks' character overcame many obstacles, including physical and mental issues, in order to survive. His story is far more believable than Brooke Shields' story.

I saw "Castaway" just before it was released and the most important parts of the story, for me, were how he survives the plane crash and how he survives his escape from the island. Both travails were presented realistically, in my opinion.

If you want to see an even more realistic story of survival, watch Robert Redford's film, "All Is Lost." It's the story of a man sailing across the oceans by himself. He gets into all kinds of trouble and has to solve an increasingly difficult series of problems. As a sailor, I can say that every problem he encounters is presented factually and his solutions (and failures) are faithful to the reality of ocean sailing. (SPOILER: It's got a reasonably happy ending.)

Having written all of this, and realizing that I've made far too much of this post(!), let me make this perfectly clear:
If I were going to be marooned on a desert island, Ginger and Mary Ann would be fine companions, I think. Of course, I'm old!
