The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsHey
My name is Jeff, I'm originally from Melbourne, Australia, last year my family moved up north to the countryside to the lovely small city Bendigo and I really love it here... I'm studying a professional writing and editing course, atm I'm writing a couple of short stories as well as a manuscript which is keeping me busy. The other day I was down in Melbourne receiving some treatment at the Alfred (hospital) because I had a double lung transplant nearly 10 years ago, the doctors and nurses there are amazing.
Are there any NBA fans here? I've been following the Sixers closely yes because of Ben Simmons, but the whole team has been amazing. I'm shamelessly on the bandwagon.
I like DU a lot, though I mostly lurk. Still I'll post from time to time. Cheers.

(14,557 posts)I discovered the AFL about 30 years ago. I was finding creative ways to watch
the games here in the US but now I can stream the games on a subscription service.
Do they televise the NBA on Australian TV or do you have to sign up for a streaming service?
Glad you posted...

(31 posts)To watch NBA here, you need FOXTEL (cable television). You can also get it via a streaming service if you want... the NBA League Pass.
Do you know the forum bigfooty? There's quite a few AFL fans from North America there, in particular Canada I think. That may be due to the influence of Mike Pyke.
Lance Franklin is my fave player. Fantastic goal he scored against GWS last weekend... he really deserves the Brownlow but unfortunately that award almost always goes to midfielders.

(14,557 posts)Not any AFL exhibition games here (US) or near lately.
One of the International Rules sets (gaa v AFL) might be played here, somewhere on the US East Coast (rumor) but I will go if it happens.
Buddy is an athlete, through and through and then some. My favorite years were the Joel Smith, Shane Crawford years.
My local NBA team would be the Lakers...right now they are a building team.
Any place , online or wherever, we can read some your short stories?

Ah the Lakers... there's some talk that Andrew Bogut will take up an ambassadorial role here in the local NBL. His presence would really help a lot to grow the game locally... it's a shame he's had so many problems with injuries.

(36,099 posts)Have not been to Melbourne, but have stayed in Sydney, Leichardt; have swum at Manley, Bondi, Coogee and Forster Beaches, stayed in Caines, Port Douglas, Daintree, snorkled the reef, hung out with my son Sydney.
Went to see the Newcastle Knights years back, had so much fun, but have forgotten everything I ever learned about the game.
All the best with your health concerns.
Thanks for the friendly intro. We're glad to have you.

(31 posts)I only stopped off briefly when my family were heading to the Gold Coast on vacation.

(36,099 posts)As for the Gold Coast, I, as a visitor, consider your whole country a gold coast.
BendigoJeff
(31 posts)It's one of the most notorious places where people discovered gold and struck it rich there. People came from all over to make a fortune in Bendigo - Chinese, Germans, many nationalities, and they've settled ever since. My family has a street named after them in Bendigo.
