Bruno Sammartino, one of the most iconic stars in the history of the WWE, has died at age 82, the WWE announced Wednesday morning.

Sammartino was the longest-reigning WWE champion in the company's history, holding the title belt for nearly eight consecutive years from May 1963 until January 1971.

He headlined Madison Square Garden shows more than 180 times in his career. After a long falling out with the company, Sammartino returned to the fold and joined the WWE Hall of Fame in 2013.

Sammartino began his record title reign in 1963 after beating Buddy Rogers. He relinquished the belt with a loss to Ivan Koloff, but he regained it again in 1973 and held it until a 1977 loss to Superstar Billy Graham.
