(25,970 posts)However, I associate them with tornadoes; I've seen 4 in my life and been perilously close to 2. Also, lightning struck a tree next to the road on which I was driving once. The tree toppled onto the road right in front of me. I managed to stop before hitting the trunk or main branches, but the car got scratched from hitting smaller ones - it was that close. When the storm passed and the rain abated somewhat, I saw the trunk of the tree, a good 18" in diameter and 3' tall, still in the ground. The top was smoldering and looked like a giant lit cigarette.

(40,416 posts)After they blow past, the air smells fresh, and the birds chirp.
I like summer thunder boomers.

(4,522 posts)I've raised a lot of pups in my day and with every one, beginning with the first storm, we have fun time. Play, get treats, go for a car ride, go visit a doggy friend...not a single one has ever been scared of storms or fireworks. Our last dog a Boston Terrier would run to sit in the window to watch a storm and she wanted to be outside as soon as the fireworks started. Light off a few bottle rockets or a roman candle for her and she would do the happy dance!

(16,386 posts)Unfortunately we seldom get them anymore in my part of Colorado. Back when I first moved here in the early 80s, we had them all the time in the summer. Now we only get a few a year. The ones in the south where I grew up were awesome.
