Turns out he has lymph node cancer and the only thing keeping him going was the steroid. The steroid might keep him ok for a short while longer, but it would only delay the inevitable. He has acted quite sick today and yesterday. He's a Goldendoodle and the best dog I have ever owned. Intelligent, loving, spirited, friendly to all. I only had him for 10 short years. It never gets any easier saying goodbye.

(17,305 posts)I've said farewell to a few dogs over the years. The last one, a German shepherd/husky cross, was 13 and she was a great girl. The vet allowed my wife and I to stay in the room with her after the needle and we spent about 20 to 25 minutes, shedding many tears.
We have a picture of her on the kitchen counter. We also have a male German shepherd/mastiff rescue from the SPCA and he's a wonderful friend.

(9,426 posts)My Rotttweiler was only 6 1/2 and had bone cancer. Tore me apart to have her put to sleep. Remember, we have to love them enough to let them go. My daughter had a Doberman with bone cancer. They decided to have his leg removed. I watched the light go out of that dog's eyes. He was so ill, even after the amputation. I swore never to have a dog go through that. You are doing the right thing. Don't let him continue to suffer. It is so hard on us, but they are in pain. They trust us to do the right thing.

(70,103 posts)you did the right thing. it is so hard to know, but my guideline is that they would go through anything for more time w us, and if i could explain that to them, i would go the whole way. but i cant. so i end up doing so many things that must seem so mean to them. even sticking a pill down their throat for pain. they dont know why the pain fell. if they did they would thank me. all they know is someone they trust is sticking things down their throats.
they must feel so betrayed when we put them through so many traumas.
i just wont do that to a person who has been loyal to me their whole lives.
be good to yourself.
and get a puppy as soon as you are able to do that. nothing cures a broken heart like a puppy.

She was a little over 15 and the love of my life. But, it was time. The worst day of my life.
Her name was 'Pearl' (I called her PearliePoo). My user name is for her.
Peace be with you mvd.

I had to put one of my beloved cats down on Monday. She was a tortie. It's so quiet without her. She was a talker, a snuggler, and a diva. I miss her terribly. It breaks my heart to see my remaining kitty looking for her around the house.

(13,776 posts)It's just the worst thing to have to do, although it's also so good that we have the option, with so much love and always with what is best for them in our hearts, to put an end to their suffering.
But being responsible for that decision, and to miss them so achingly when they're gone... it's just so hard.

(65,173 posts)My condolences go out. Yes the first thing I am noticing is a profound emptiness in the house. Dogs are so much a part of our lives.
I have had 4 dogs in my life - Scotty (terrier who died at 13), Benji (Scottish Terrier who died at 11 1/2 of cancer), Reba (possible Akita/Chow/Golden Retriever mix - maybe more breeds - who died at 11 1/2 of cancer), and Gordon. Scotty I think died of organ failure. Unfortunately my beloved Gordon had the shortest life of all my dogs.

(27,811 posts)and we had to make the tough decision for him too. He was older than your guy, but he was a rescue and we only had 10 years with him, too. He was the sweetest dog I ever met.
May they enjoy the Happy Hunting Grounds together.

(22,037 posts)I'm sorry to hear of your loss. Dogs can be such amazing friends and their loss can be powerful.
We have an appointment on Friday to euthanize our 16-year old cocker spaniel. He's become increasingly incontinent and although he eats and drinks heartily, the results are uncomfortable for all of us. We're going to miss Bubba.
I hope you have some peace, mvd.

(53,410 posts)I did that with my dog and whispered all the endearments I ever used until the end. She passed very gently with my arms wrapped snuggly around her. She was my sons dog, the love of his life. He died a year before and I know that if by any chance there is an afterlife he was there to take her from my arms.

(22,073 posts)So sorry. Apparently this is the most common cancer in dogs. I've lost a couple to it now. Never gets any easier, but I'm sure Gordon would be all for getting another dog to fill the hole in your heart that he left.

My condolences, a very sad day I came across this a while back and had to save it. I'm up there in age and throughout my life I had to put 3 dogs down. Always love my Brittanys. Lovable and loyal. Would hunt to exhaustion. Just a link that tore me up. Wish I could express as well as Alice: "His name was Grizzly, and he was a good boy."

(115,693 posts)It's so hard to let them go but it has to be done as the last act of love - been through it with cats (RIP, Charles, Alice, Woody and Teddy) and it doesn't get easier. But even though it hurts when they leave us, we wouldn't want to go through life without our animal friends.

(11,611 posts)My beagle Schatzie had this and we ended up putting her down. She went one day before her 11th birthday. It wasn't easy but we had no choice. She was suffering. I'll never forget her pleading little eyes begging us to talk the pain away. Both she and Gordon are in a better place now.
It's tough to lose a pet. Sending hugs.

Even though Gordon was a mixed breed, the cancer gene in Golden Retrievers can be strong, and I never knew Gordon's Golden Retriever dad. Never saw either parent. If I ever get a dog again, I'd like more health info. Gordon did live a nice 10 full years, looking at the positive side.
