The Isle of Man Tourist Trophy was last week - it's the last motor race held on a course composed entirely of public roads, with attendant hazards.
The top-class motorcyclists are hitting 190mph while weaving through tiny Manx villages - "At a certain point, you stop being shocked by how many people have died here. The shock is how many are still alive." The death total is148 since 1906. It's brutal, bloody, and purely insane. But I hope it's never cancelled; the people riding it know and accept the risks. Who are we to judge?
BTW, the new all time lap record was set this year, an AVERAGE of 134.4mph over a 30+ mile mixed road course...Godspeed, sir.

(4,743 posts)I've run plenty of tracks, and I'll freely admit that the scrapes on my knee pucks were completely illegally acquired on the streets, but you gotta agree the TT is a whole different level...airborne at 170!

(25,862 posts)but I guess if the only people who get killed are the ones who willingly and knowingly participate in the race, well then, it's not necessarily okay, but they do know the risks. Or I hope they do.

(4,743 posts)But, given that there is literally no crowd control - you can sit in the road if you really want - I assume the guys watching from the grass banks six inches from the racing line also realize and accept the risks.
If we all willingly accept death as a possibility, why would you say it's not "necessarily" OK?

(25,862 posts)I know that sensible people can have a very different take on this, so please understand I am not trying to convince you to think other than as you do about this event.
I had never even heard of it until this post, so I am not working from a very informed position, and I realize that.

(2,050 posts)I love to ride although I have crashed a bit too much so I had to give it up, sucks...
But that clip is just insane, oh damn that's on the edge, wow, just wow.
When you ride that hard you accept the risk and did so a long time ago, that skill level demands more than just a little comittment.
I'm going to look for that clip on the net for the big screen, now that would be something.
Beyond impressive.
