The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsWhen you are in front of one of Europe's famous landmarks, what do you do?
Why, take photos of one of DU's most famous members standing in front of it, of course!
California Peggy and Lionel Mandrake accompanied me down to the Kölner Dom (Cathedral at Cologne) today, and after we had our visit, it was my pleasure to take them out for a grand Turkish lunch.

(4,757 posts)1100 steps if I remember correctly.
DFW
(54,403 posts)Peggy and her husband have some serious knee issues. It's not the first three steps that would have presented a problem, It's the last 1097 steps that would have made this a no-go.

(21,596 posts)Wow! A DFW German Tour is top notch!
The cathedral is amazing!
Have you ever climbed the stairs to the top?
DFW
(54,403 posts)My wife and I did the one in Prague at the castle. Peggy and consort would have had a hard time negotiating 1100 steps, so it was out of the question today.

(31,392 posts)doesn't have his wallet in the backpack.
We encountered a gentleman several years ago in Stockholm at our hotel on a Sunday morning reporting to the desk clerk he'd had his wallet stolen out of his backpack--he was German--and asking the clerk whether he should report it to the police.
My husband and sons always carried their wallets in front pockets when traveling in Europe.

(31,392 posts)I caught a guy with his hand under my husband's jacket going for his back pocket coming up the stairs out of an U bahn station in Berlin. Fortunately, he was not carrying his wallet there.
Looks like you're having a great time!

(54,403 posts)A pickpocket was trying to steal the wallet of a Chinese tourist in the crowded car. The Chinese guy noticed it, grabbed his wallet back, and then proceeded to give the car a martial arts demonstration--on the would-be thief! We all applauded, and the thief ran like hell when the doors opened at the next station.

(15,090 posts)Ive only seen the Dom once in December in the rain and thought it was terribly dark, dreary, and depressing. I hope its better in summer sunlight.

(54,403 posts)It can't decide if it's early April or mid-July, and keeps vacillating between the two, stopping at every milk pail along the way.

When I first started coming to Germany, a Canadian friend who was stationed here told me, "if you don't like the weather in Germany, wait a minute." He wasn't exaggerating in the slightest.

DFW
(54,403 posts)"Cyber Shot," if that is even a model. I must have had it for the better part of two decades. I'm not good at photography, so I never got myself any kind of sophisticated camera.

(12,858 posts)(Also visited Koeln cathedral. Once with now ex when there was massive renovation in progress.)
Learned fairly late that Zwingli and Luther (pretty sure it was those 2) argued over a point of doctrine in the great hall of Marburg castle. The Calvinist and the Lutheran were unable to agree. Some historians contend that this lack of agreement between these 2 protestant groups aided the success of the Counter Reformation.

(54,403 posts)Just never been by there. Just last month, we were in Coburg for the first time. Coburg is an exquisitely preserved city with architecture to die for, but it is where the old east-west German border was, and used to be the end of the world. But one of my wife's cousins just moved there and got married there, and so we went, and were pleasantly amazed. I supposed one of these years, Marburg will be on the schedule as well.

(12,858 posts)First went to Marburg in 62, 1st yr of grad school.
Same yr went to Rothenburg. Absolutely blown away by Riemenschneider work. Had never heard of him before. (Sculptor of Reformation era. Read somewhere that his hands were cut off(!!!) in Peasants Revolt b/c he was on wrong side. Same war in which Luther took side of rulers and preached death to peasants. They thought that when Luther preached that all were equal before God, that he also would agree that peasants and rulers were equal on earth. Luther supposedly said 'kill them all - the peasants - and let God sort it out'.)

When a building in Europe is 200 years old, it's time to wash the windows.

DFW
(54,403 posts)We took the local train down to Cologne. It takes longer than changing trains at Düsseldorf, but you don't have to change trains if you stay on the local, and Peggy and her husband are not very mobile, so it was a blessing to have the option.
They are going up to Hamburg for Saturday night to visit with other friends, and will be back tomorrow night. I will take them to the airport in a little over an hour.
Mrs. DFW has had to run up to northern Germany and back a lot because her mother is very ill, and can't be moved for the moment. However, on Thursday night we did have a great meal at an old-fashioned style German place up the road we had never been to before. She plans to be back tomorrow night to cook one last gala meal before Peggy and L.M. return to London Tuesday on the first leg of their trip home.
