Our local Democratic party is having a potluck social and fundraiser. If it weren't an important fundraiser, there's no way I would attend. I don't have any desire to cook for others, and I refuse to eat any food others bring on account of not wanting to 'mooch.'
So an otherwise nice social occasion of local unity leaves me feeling bad about hating on potlucks and wishing whoever decided this was a good idea be removed from the social committee.
Oh well, just venting. I'll go and donate for a good cause. Here's hoping I'm not the only grump about these things.

(35,729 posts)Potlucks are a fun way to learn new dishes from people with whom you're most likely compatible. You never know what's going to be there, so the element of chance is involved. It's also a good way to spotlight one of your own favorite recipes.
Mooch? I don't get that. By bringing a dish, you're entitled to try everyone else's. If you don't want to cook, call in a favor from a friend or relative and ask them to do it for the cause. You can also buy some Chinese or some other takeout. I've seen that done more than a few times.

There are some really excellent options out there. If I can manage the time, I'll swing by my local bakery for cookies.
Easy peasy

(6,377 posts)Literally the point of a potluck is to bring food for others to eat.

(29,722 posts)caterer? Spend too much of the fund raising dollars on fundraiser. Have the women prepare food and serve you? This is 2018.
Your choices are no food and not much fun or everyone prepare something and everyone share.
The idea that you are mooching would only apply if you brought nothing. If everyone does bring a dish, then there is always so much food, there's more for seconds of something you really like.

(17,019 posts)People make their best dish so there's always lots of great food. But, if you don't like them just go and have fun. Nothing says you have to bring anything or eat.

(2,396 posts)I'm too paranoid about proper food temperature.
Has it been prepared and kept in the correct temperature range?
I'd be ok with packaged, non-perishable food
I don't even eat the food at my extended family's huge social event potlucks.
Yeah, I'm a lot of fun at parties

I always try to make sure I have SOMETHING by bringing a veggie tray.
I often can't eat the salad (if there is one) due to bacon bits. ("It's ALMOST vegetarian!" I'm told)
