(29,223 posts)and if I could figure out how to subscribe to it without a cable or dish provider... I would get HBO-GO (GOT and Silicon Valley)

(2,829 posts)I had HBO NOW for awhile but I didn't watch it enough to make it worthwhile. I also use Netflix and I hardly watch that. Oddly, I mostly watch YouTube.

(15,682 posts)We haven't talked in a long time, my friend. I hope you're doing well!!
So how do you get your services? Do you have sling or one of the other a la cart services? I was beginning to understand how all this would work and then let it go for the easier more expensive route.

Oh, and we have Amazon Prime. I forget everything we have.

(38,326 posts)It's the minimum Netflix subscription, a single stream of standard definition video. It's a solid service, never drops out buffering, and inexpensive. We're paying for the internet connection anyways.
We also rent DVDs from RedBox, borrow them from the library, or buy them in thrift stores. Sometimes we'll buy DVDs of a movie we like.
We don't watch any broadcast television so we never see any commercials.
I don't feel any scarcity of things to watch, and avoiding television news and commercials is probably good for my mental health.
Reading posts from other people on DU who have quit traditional television, and by our own experience, once you've quit television for a couple of years you don't go back.

(15,682 posts)would be willing to set me on a path to smarter TV services. I was OK with my Spectrum package the first year I lived here (Huntington Beach). But just a few month ago I started paying the normal price. And it seems astronomical, for what I get.
Hate the bill. Love the movies and programs I watch. Must have internet. I don't know what I should do. I'm thinking we need a couple of smart TVs just to start. Can anyone tell me? Make any suggestions?
We're willing to invest in the TVs if we can get the monthly bill down to something reasonable and still have good viewing access. As it stands right now we pay $190 for Spectrum and have additional, separate bills for Amazon and Netflix (that must be viewed on other devices). We even have a ROKU that seems like too much trouble to use. That's why I'm thinking smart TVs might be the answer. Would I be able to use all the services I have on a smart TV? One remote for all? That's what I'm looking for.

(38,958 posts)I will happily buy new TVs when the time comes. We have about another 18 months on our spectrum introductory prices so I will be patient and watch both the services develop and tv prices over that time.
I appreciate these threads as I am learning a great deal.

(34,137 posts)With our LG Smart TV we can get Netflix, Hulu, Sling, and many others, but we can't get BritBox, Acorn TV or Curiosity Stream, all of which we watch regularly. I ended up buying a Roku for it, too, so I could get the same streaming channels I do on the other TVs in the house.
The other day I was talking to someone who uses Amazon Fire Stick and he gets some free channels I can't with the Roku - Mobdro and Terrarium, for instance.
While my advice would be to try to pick which services you want before you buy so you can get the streaming device that will let you use them, that is nearly impossible. Until you start streaming, you will not know which you will actually use on a regular basis. I do prefer the add on devices, such as Roku or the Amazon stick, since you can upgrade them as technology improves or switch them out as you find out about additional services.

(15,552 posts)My local library subscribes to some sort of digital package. By having a library card I can watch Acorn for free. I don't know what other stations they offer yet, maybe none, but I love a lot of the British TV series. I have a Roku box. All I had to do was go online to the website the library has and sign up with my library card and pin number. I would guess that smaller libraries may not be able to afford to offer this. I belong to a larger library in a vibrant community that is big on supporting their library.

(34,137 posts)Can you watch on your TV or does it stream to your computer when you go through the library?

(22,270 posts)We do not feel the need to have a 'smart' TV, because we have a ROKU. We have an antenna for the local channels also
