I was at Sam's Club with my boyfriend, I approached a young man (an employee) to ask where I could find the coffee. The young man looked at me and "said you were my teacher, I remember you." I asked his last name and I remembered him too. I was a substitute in his 4th grade class for about 3 months. He was a quiet young kid. He told me he liked me teaching him math. I was so glad to see him working, because I can name 2 kids from the same class that have been shot & killed and one who is serving life in prison for murder. I introduced my boyfriend to him and they shook hands.
When I was leaving, he enveloped me in his 6' 4'' frame and hugged me. When I came home I cried.

My husband is a retired teacher, too, and once in a while we run into one of his former students somewhere. They are always happy to see him and seem to have good memories of being in his class.
However, sadly, he sees or hears of a kid on the news occasionally who was killed or ended up in jail and he'll say he was a former student of his. It's so sad.

(51,615 posts)a few months ago and she had a baby on her hip. She remembered me from 15 years ago. This has happened to me a few times over the years with ex-students or their parents. Sometimes they track me down (I no longer teach) and call or write to me or a relative while looking for me since I don't use social media. It has always been a positive experience and no sad stories like the one shared here. I saved all their class photos and send them cards at Christmas. It is a compliment when they tell me that I look the same. I think they're crazy.

The work teachers do is every bit a service to this country as the others.
Thank you for your service!
