Well, thank God it's not Alzheimer's!

To update the situation with my mother:

It's not Alzheimer's. It wasn't a stroke. Senior onset senile dementia, and may be reversible, according to her nurse, or at least controllable. She's still not entirely lucid, and still delusional. She's still looking for her child, Lefty. (That's me, by the way, although no one has ever called me that -- and for LynneSin, Madinmaryland, and anybody else, I **WILL** kick your ass if you start calling me that!).

I'm kinda exhausted. Don't know whether to be relieved or what. But at least I have more info now.

My heartfelt thanks to all of you on DU for the vibes, hugs, prayers, and support!! You're the best part of DU, and you're why I love this place.

It's been a hell of a roller coaster ride, but now you have more information, and hopefully, a way forward!

Of course you're exhausted!

Please take it easy, and rest...

We've *still* got your back, sweetie!

My best vibes to your mom!

From medications, nutritional changes/vitamin therapy, behavioral therapy and exercise, all of which have shown to have some improvement in people with dementia.

So you can allow yourself to have hope, and that is very important. Good luck to you and your family.

I think it's good news, anyway. I must admit I smile about the "Lefty" thing. Don't know WHERE she came up with that!

I'll still send along vibes. Get some rest. Not knowing is the most stressful and scary part of it. Keep hope in your heart.

.
.
.
That usually has a relatively long, incremental progression -- although many of the symptoms you
described are the same.
.
MFMM had gone through a stage of yelling... even paranoia (she thought the staff was stealing her
"stuff" (turns out they had hired a weekly cleaner at home who had ripped them off steadily and
mercilessly). The good part was that she eventually reached that childlike state where she was
very happy (and very sweet) the vast majority of the time. I would take in Oz books (both her and
my favorites from our childhoods) and read them to her. She seemed blissful as she was reintroduced
to some very old, very good friends in those books. I was having a great time, too.
,
The worst part (that was actually very cute) was that she would ask (beg) me not to tell "Mother"
that she had been naughty the night before (it was always some small child's transgression). "Mother"
had passed away fully 50 years prior to that.
.
She didn't know exactly WHO I was, but she liked me a lot. That was enough.
.
.
Vibes still headed your way.
.
.
.
A "Lefty" was the inspiration for my username -- YOU find the parallels.

Again, I stress how sorry I am that you are facing this issue with your mom. However, I am very glad you are able to be there with her right now. I'm sure it comforts her (Lefty! ) even if it is not on a level that we fully understand.

As I said before, it is not uncommon for older folks to face confusion when they are dealing with some form of physical illness or some of the prescriptions that they get from the docs. Here's hoping that your mom will continue to improve and actually start teasing you with that nickname again!

Hell, I'm about ready to embrace the "Lefty" name. I like the political connotations. And there's "Pancho and Lefty" -- great tune!

for all of our moms!

Knowing the diagnosis is the first step in formulating a plan for the future. Once you have a plan, it will help you cope with the feeling of life being out of control. It's important for you to take care of yourself, also. You can't be of any assistance to her if you aren't taking care of yourself first. Good luck.

My Mom suffered from dementia the last few years of her life. Based on your description, it does sound similar to what she had. I wish you and your family well. If you want to talk more about it, feel free to PM me.

Yeah, I'm left-handed, and the only one in the family who is. So we figure she has to be referring to me.
