many times it will auto-correct to something I did not intend,
and unless I pay attention, it turns out goofy.

after an auto-correct. Lost a job, 6 months on paid vacation, started a new business, it goes on and on.

Can't auto correct be turned off? People constantly blame it for dumb stuff, but it is, at least for me, be much faster to fully type out the words rather than have even the correct thing filled in, because again, for me, that would interrupt my flow of thought and slow me down getting to the next word. And if it auto corrects to the wrong word, that's even worse.

I certainly make my share of typos, too many of which actually make it to the post. I do have the red underscore show up when something is simply misspelled, and that's hugely useful. Of course, it doesn't solve the problem of typing the wrong word entirely.

Seems like it is done differently with pretty much every OS and/or keyboard app. Took me awhile to find it in kika, but I turned mine off. If you do an internet search for "turn off autocorrect ...." with the name of your type of phone or keyboard app you'll find instructions.

I have a dumb phone that I can text on, using a pull-out keyboard. No auto correct there.

Otherwise I am typing on a real keyboard, as I'm a fast typist and the ones on things like tablets make me crazy because they simply aren't good for a good, fast touch typist.

I use a texting program on my phone that enables me to use my computer much of the time instead of the phone.
