As bad as it was, it was better than the cold food (K rations) the Marines on Guadalcanal got,
My dad and his Navy buddies would lend their caps to the Marines so they could go into the mess tent and eat hot food.
(It was so hot on Guadalcanal, that nobody wore uniforms, only T-shirts & pants, so wearing a Naval cap was all a Marine needed to get into the mess tent)
