It's a bit breezy so it's hard to get a really clear photo but I found this little creature when I went out to cut some dill for a salad.
There has been a beautiful Black Swallowtail hanging around my front garden, this Summer.

(26,262 posts)That stalk won't last the Winter. I might have to start getting creative.

(804 posts)I bring them in and raise them. That one looks to be in its last instar and doesn't have much longer before forming a chrysalis! Don't worry about it forming on the dill - they wander away to find an appropriate spot.
Just FYI, though, a wasp or spider may eat it before it can form the chrysalis. Wasps, especially, LOVE them.

(26,262 posts)There are lots of bees around this part of the garden, but I haven't seen many wasps or spiders.

(804 posts)You could bring it in, if you're willing to provide a lot of dill and some branches for it. They're really easy to care for (if you're so inclined) and there are good resources online to help. If not, that's completely understandable. Bringing bugs into the house isn't everyone's thing, for some reason.

(31,406 posts)My dill plants are usually covered with swallowtail caterpillars by mid-summer; its really fun to watch them feed. Dont worry, dill is a fast growing herb, and you can sow more seeds into the garden mid-summer for an early fall crop so you wont lose your whole crop to the caterpillars. Seeing my zinnias covered by swallowtail butterflies at the end of the summer makes the small sacrifice of the dill in my garden worth it.

(26,262 posts)Basil, thyme, rosemary, marjoram, oregano and, of course, dill. Lots and LOTS of dil. Didn't know it attracted butterflies!
I also grow quite a substantial amount of Milkweed for the Monarchs and Sunflowers for the birds - especially the yellow finches.

(14,857 posts)If you get too many caterpillars and they run out of food, you can feed them store-bought parsley. I've done that many times.

(3,864 posts)which was mainly about the monarchs, but at the end she spoke about the Swallowtail - which btw is the NJ butterfly.
She said she had not seen many this year. I have not either. I don't have dill, but I used to have bunches on my Rue.

(19,243 posts)Really a great plant all around, especially in a mass planting. About as bulletproof as you can get.
Just make sure it's the non-hybridized type, as the hybrids don't create pollen. I just start them from seed.

(26,262 posts)I'm always weeding around this flower bed, and I've never seen caterpillars, before. I'm pretty geeked, right about now.
