Woke up this morning with earworm: Sia, Chandelier

The thought about posting it here (2nd time) inescapably brought the association of what somebody said about it the first time, that the profundity or what-made-it-special was that it was *about* crushing addiction and psychological pain. I have always said that MELODY is king and emperor OVER LYRICS. And in the past month or two when TCM ran four of BERSTEIN's Young People's Concerts, in one of them he said that music is not *ABOUT* anything, that music can be composed to accompany Romeo & Juliet (West Side Story) and the SAME music can be said to be "about" (my trash paraphrase) the life cycle of amoebas and still it is just MUSIC.

I am captivated first and only by a melody, and after being entranced by it many times might look to see what the lyrics say, and perhaps sometimes the lyricist is elevated knowing the MELODY is a gem and matches the quality of the lyrics to it. Or, if a composer is given special words first, the music might be called upon to be extra inspired, but rip off the words and it is still the MUSIC. Lord CHESTERFIELD (not Dr JOHNSON) said, "What is too silly to be SAID, is SUNG."

As for this particular song, I still have not looked up the lyrics and can only make out phrases here or there. I looked for a YouTube that did not have this young performer dancing because the performance disturbs me, except for the charming double curtsy/bow in the doorway at the end. The singer's voice is another INSTRUMENT with the orchestra's other instruments, and this rawness fits with perfect expression.

What captivates me is the SOARING "hook" chorus, which to me suggests to be "about" the opposite of the said-to-be psychological disturbance.

Sia has a haunting voice. At first I didn't listen to the lyrics, but once I did they made the song even more profound.

Another song of hers that has been playing over and over in my head is "Titanium" (David Guetta, featuring Sia)

2. The first time I heard it/Chandelier was with the Dior (perfume?) commercial.

Not to make light, but as I remember the Dior commercials are elegantly staged, gorgeous, so it proves BERNSTEIN's point that the music is its own thing and can be matched up to whatever random message. It was the total Sia/lyrics package with the perfume, so how would the profound message of the words be saying something about PERFUME?!1

Thanks for your insightful appreciation of the song, although you retain a leaning for the words.

As for the video you posted (is it named "Titanium"?), the opening grabbed me immediately and the rest of the melody is an excellent sound for me and I could see listening to it a lot, but FOR ME not a HOOK ENOUGH to be like Chandelier. As usual, I can only make out a few words here or there, am disturbed by the visuals. The MUSIC of it could grow on me for listening multiple times, but when I want to immerse into STORIES it's a separate thing.

*PLEASE* do not take what I'm saying as deprecating. I really appreciate the thoughtfulness you show in your sensibilities.

3. It's funny, "Chandelier" is about Sia's alcoholism so it's strange that it would be

used for a perfume advertisement, although it is very catchy. I suppose if you only play the chorus it could work.

Titianium is a disturbing song and meant to be about school shootings. I wasn't very taken in by the video either, but I really liked the song itself. Whatever Sia sings she just grabs at the heartstrings. Her voice is so poignant and unique.

Anyway, thank you for posting this. I haven't heard the song in a while and forgot how much I like it.

9. Sorry (& I apologize *never*) to bust your bubble I kneel before, but here are commercials

Apparently our tres sensible Sia doesn't mind selling our gorgeous/perfect and psychological angst song multiple times for commercial purposes, and I am NOT criticizing!1 The one with Ms THERON (without "Chandelier&quot is the one I remember, with the Pantheon "eye", blasphemously (NOT) used in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum:

Plus, gotta say, Ms PORTMAN in Black Swan is one of my all time great artists/movies, and throwing TCHAIKOVSKY into the mix of the movie is over the top!1

Hookay, but this visual is the one that I conflated/confused with our "Chandelier" music:

13. Interesting, but I notice in the ads they edit out the "drink". It's just 1,2,3...

Not 1,2,3 drink like it is in Sia's original song. They don't acknowledge that it has anything to do with alcoholism. I am not quite understanding why you are so unsure of the song's meaning. It is pretty clear and has even been acknowledged by the artist.

14. I have zero doubt about the "meaning" (of the words)

Just am adamant about being attracted to the melody/music/sound of it ONLY and frankly give small f***s about the "meaning". I'm amazed you noticed the 123 missing word - *i* didn't!1

*****so in the ads the "meaning" is different?!1 haha

Now this addictive song will be on a loop in my head until I can replace it with my tried-and-true ear worm killer. Yellow Submarine.

6. Popular artists/music is/are very dependent on the lyric.

Sure the music matters, and the best songs often have great instrumentation, composition, production and lyrics. But the artists delivery of the lyrics is important as well. Maybe even more so.

Jon Mitchell's work is a prime example of everything coming together. And a given, produced-for-public-consumption song remains iconic in people's psyche.

Sometimes all that matters is the lyric and delivery, even if the lyric is gibberish or nonsense. That surf song, The Bird is the Word comes to mind. A popular song like Walk This Way has great musical hooks and musicianship, but is also blessed with some of best lyrics and delivery by Steven Tyler, who I think is one of great American rock poets right up there with Jim Morrison and Bob Dylan.

Sia's lyric in the choral hook is very appropriate for the song, and poignant in it's manic, defiant triumph within the spiral of addiction.

7. "everything coming together" - you said it!1

A lot of times it's funny to me when the performers are acting out the words, pounding their chest when saying the word "heart" or waving goodbye with "goodbye" or whatever. The funniest was when Celine sang the Titanic song, wearing the gigantic gem on a necklace and she POUNDED her breastbone where the gigantic gem was. I was going, like, whoa that must have hurt!1

As for your "manic triumph, spiral of addiction" - wow, you really captured the lyric/message, but I'll say it forever, the SOARING MUSIC is what it is for me!1 When I want to meditate on that particular message, I'll do it separately. It might be at the fore for me if somebody has a memorial and the song is played for it for the message's meaning, but for music's sake it's the MUSIC for me!1
