I kind of remember an album from back in the 80s when record stores were a thing.

I don't remember what album it was, but on the cover it said "Do Not Pay More Than $1.98 For This Album."

Does anyone else remember that?

Did I dream it?

Metallica had one called The $5.98 EP-Garage Days re-revisited. Maybe that was it?

The title had The $5.98 E.P. included in an effort to ensure that fans were not overcharged for it.[3] The original cassette release included a sticker which read "If they try to charge more, STEAL IT!" The official United States CD release of the EP amended the title (and the price) to The $9.98 CD because the retail price of CDs was much higher than cassettes; other countries (such as Australia) still displayed The $5.98 E.P. with a sticker stating that this was the "title" and not the price.

Sounds like a re-take of Hoffman's "Steal This Book".

"$8.98" if MCA raised prices. There's a peach crate of records on the cover marked 8.98.

I see you got the answer you were looking for, but ol' Tom should get his due.
