A New York man will be living large thanks to his decision to buy some Slim Jims for his dog.
New York Lottery officials say Monday that 73-year-old Dale Farrand recently won the $10 million prize on a "Cash Spectacular" scratch-off ticket. The Fort Edward man says he bought a $30 ticket at a local Cumberland Farms convenience store while buying Slim Jims snacks for his dog Boots.
He scratched the ticket in his car and realized he was a winner. Farrand says he drove straight home and had his wife check the ticket for him.
Farrand will receive a lump-sum payment of $6.7 million after required withholdings. He says he'll use the windfall to pay off his mortgage, make home improvements and help his children and grandchildren.

(205,927 posts)They sell an awful lot of lottery tickets around here, it's great to hear a deserving guy won. Fort Edward is not a prosperous town.
Here's the local story:
Fort Edward lottery winner claims his prize
Fort Edward residents Dale Farrand and his wife, Catherine, officially became multimillionaires on Monday, as the state Lottery Department held its official check ceremony for the $10 million prize he won on a scratch-off ticket.
The Farrands opted for the lump sum distribution of the prize, so they will take home $6,718,000 in all.
Dale Farrand, 73, bought the ticket Aug. 14 at the Cumberland Farms store on Broadway in the village of Fort Edward. He said he stopped by for cigarettes and a treat for his dog, Boots, and decided to buy one of the $30 tickets in the $350,000,000 Cash Spectacular scratch-off game.

The Farrands said they plan to stay in their home in the Fort Edward neighborhood that they love, but will renovate the house. They also plan to set up trust funds for grandchildren.
Dale Farrand, a newly retired construction engineer, said the home has been in his wifes family for generations, and the couple are close to neighbors. He said he may take a trip to his high school reunion, and one of his brothers was pushing him to take a trip to Europe.
Were going to help the whole family, Catherine Farrand said.
