I'll take my small victories anywhere I can get them. I rescued an anti-vaxxer yesterday.

Had a new patient come in for a visit yesterday. Had a very pleasant encounter with him as I got his past medical history and his list of chronic conditions. We made plans to manage them with lab tests and medication refills. While he was in the lab, I started writing up the chart note. My MA put at the bottom of his chart that he had refused her offer of a flu shot. She is required to put that in the chart.

I went to the lab and had a talk with him, encouraging him to get his flu shot. He said: "That's just not something I'm in to. I don't want to do it right now."

I asked what his objections were to immunization, and he was a little vague, not stating any of the usual anti-vaxxer talking points. I guessed he just was confused by all of the misinformation out there. He said: "Isn't there still some debate as to the effectiveness of the flu shot?"

I replied: "In the media, which thrives on controversy, yes. In the scientific community, no. 100 years ago, anywhere from 50-100 million people died from the Spanish Flu. That doesn't happen anymore because of the vaccine."

He has a brand-new baby daughter. I admit to shamelessly invoking her in my argument. "By getting your flu shot, not only are you protecting yourself, you are protecting your daughter, and anyone else who, for whatever reason, is unable to get the vaccine."

"Okay. Thank you. I'll get my flu shot, then."

I went up to the MA's desk and muttered: "Quick; give him his flu shot before he changes his mind."

Just wondering. Do you know? The preservatives can change at any time, no?

Don't get me wrong. I'm all for kids getting their shots, but I shy away from a yearly shot.

I also don't trust all doctors, since a few have lied to me.

Thanks for the 'concern'.

You are no doubt referring to thimerisol, which is no longer used as a preservative in vaccines. Also, with single-dose vials, preservatives are not really necessary.

Anyway, I'm not a doctor; I'm a Physician Assistant. And I'm willing to bet that your doctors didn't lie to you; they just didn't tell you what you wanted to hear.

But thank you for playing.

And look at yourself.

1 - you didn't answer my question. You have no idea what was in the shot. Yes, I got one pharmacist to look and it did not list a preservative. But if you don't look every time, how do you know? Even progressives trust authority to easily.

2 - One example of a doctor lying to me was one who claimed to be holistic but really had no idea about nutrition or any recommendations besides drugs.

We don't get our vaccines from some guy named Manny selling them out of the trunk of his car. We get them from licensed, regulated pharmaceutical dealers.

Everyone on the medical team has a job to do. Mine is providing safe, effective medical care for our patients. My MA's ensure that the vaccine I ordered for the patient is the right medication, unexpired, and not from a vaccine lot that has been flagged for any reason. The clinical management team is responsible for obtaining the appropriate vaccines from the appropriate vendors. We trust each other to do our jobs correctly. It's the way the world works when you surround yourself with smart, diligent, trustworthy people.

We don't place any trust in some anonymous online trouble-maker.

I'm sorry to harsh your victory. Be happy.

I'm just a little more skeptical than you.

You don't have to be ALL-OR-NOTHING about it. Medical people are great, but they are only human, and when you add greed into the Big Pharma picture you get opiate addictions and deaths.

Hey, and just plain mistakes kill -

The third-leading cause of death in US most doctors don't want you to know about

A recent Johns Hopkins study claims more than 250,000 people in the U.S. die every year from medical errors. Other reports claim the numbers to be as high as 440,000.
Medical errors are the third-leading cause of death after heart disease and cancer.

Instead of large, inexpensive, multi-dose vials for vaccine, the manufacturers had to start using small one-dose vials, which is much more expensive over all. So the anti-vaxx idiocy about vaccines being a cash cow for pharmaceutical companies still isn't true, but they tried to make it a self-fulfilling prophecy.

My annual flu shot was going to be next month, but I moved it up to today - I have a trip to NYC next week and it sure couldn't hurt. I'm a believer now.

Deaths of unrestrained passengers in car accidents, and deaths from smoking are, like deaths from influenza, going down all the time, due to educating the public and providing the necessary safety measures.

Thank you!

And for not smoking...

I've actually heard that on more than one occasion right here on DU.

And never once in the exam room in nine years of clinical practice.

I do meet a lot of patients who have an inordinate faith in the power of vitamins.

I know, I know it's a coincidence. Or not. But what I know is I cannot die of the flu this year. I don't have time to die of the flu this year. I am too busy to get the flu and die this year. AND I got a Publix gift card when I got my shot. So there.

I caught H1N1 a few years ago. It was a bad case: hospital, fever, vomiting, congestive heart failure, renal failure and I don't know what else. I didn't know what it was until I got well enough to understand what they were telling me. Dang near died! Any time some one tells me they never get a flu shot, I tell my story and hope someone gets a shot.

I completely recovered from the CHF. My kidneys are pretty well shot any way, but recovered enough function to get by. Can't afford to tempt fate again. Just got my shot Monday.

Don't get two vaccines at the same time.

I got the hi-test "senior" flu shot, and a pneumonia shot (Pneumovax 23?) at the same time. Chills? Fever? Wow!

And I was thinking about the hat-trick - adding a Shingrix shot. I'm glad I put that one off.

Anyway, I'm back to normal, or whatever passes for normal in this Bozo's world.

When I was a kid, inducted into the Army, I had a ton of vaccines all at once (and all shot from high-powered squirt guns). No problem at all.
