Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsNow I've seen everything! A patient stuck rolled-up newspaper in his ear and set it on fire.
A patient came in complaining of ear pain. I asked the usual questions. Any discharge from your ear? Any prolonged exposure to loud noises? Did you stick anything in there?
"Yes. My ear was really itchy, so I tried a home remedy that's supposed to ease the itching. I stuck a piece of rolled-up newspaper in my ear and set it on fire. The pain got worse after that."
I took a look in his ear. No effusion, discharge, or other sign of infection. The ear canal was red and irritated-looking, but otherwise fine.
I gave him some information which could prevent such an occurrence in the future; namely: don't stick something in your ear and light it on fire!
Rx for ibuprofen for the pain.

Newspaper Ear Cones are the "poor man's" ear candle. 2-5
sheets of newspaper are rolled tightly into a cone and lit at the big
end while the small tip is inserted in the ear.

(4,937 posts)I would never use newspaper or anything else. The ear candles are purpose made and burn slowly and not very big flame....also, ever do ear candling unsupervised.

Ear candling
Should general practitioners recommend it?
J. Rafferty, MB CHB, A. Tsikoudas, FRCS DLO, and B.C. Davis, FRCS ED
Dr Rafferty was training in the Foundation Programme at Ninewells Hospital in Dundee, Scotland, at the time of writing the article. She is currently doing health and development work in Malawi, Africa. Mr Davis was a consultant and Mr Tsikoudas is an otolaryngologist at Ninewells Hospital
Ear candling appears to be popular and is heavily advertised with claims that could seem scientific to lay people. However, its claimed mechanism of action has not been verified, no positive clinical effect has been reliably recorded, and it is associated with considerable risk. No evidence suggests that ear candling is an effective treatment for any condition. On this basis, we believe it can do more harm than good and we recommend that GPs discourage its use.

(16,937 posts)I was dating this cutie (later to become my wife ) and her mother told me about this "remedy" to remove ear wax. Since my honey's father was complaining about ear problems, Mom sat him down and did just that - a cone of newspaper stuck into his ear and then lit it!
Claimed that it worked - but NEVER let them use it on me!

Why no limitations?...because there is "more" . and I love your story. Thank You for sharing this story with us...

I sense a book -- Clinic Anecdotes -- about some of the cases you've had to handle. You could do that without violating confidentiality if you changed the names to protect the stupid.

No wonder the ear candles hadn't worked.
