Some good meals (prepared by the boarders,) and interesting conversations, an international group.

A lot of them are sober homes for people in recovery. They often have a curfew and are dry obviously but other than that they are your run of the mill boarding home.

I haven’t thought about them in years. Why not bring them back now that rent is so high.

Homes on the Hague used to be boarding houses...now they are million dollar homes...which will be swamped by rising/sinking in Norfolk, VA

we have boarding houses. Supposedly clean. Right. If I were looking to buy drugs that's the first place I'd go. Some are probably above board, but most are run by sketchy characters who want to make some money. No place I'd put a family member, not even one who voted for Trump.

Circa 2012, my brother was living in one in the Philly suburbs at a cool $400 a month.

It's an old rectory and many artists live there. Nice people.

they had a community kitchen, where you could cook your food and eat it.

I once stayed at one near Tomales Bay, CA that was owned by a painter who lived in his brand new studio out back.
It was a beautiful old restored Victorian house with many rooms, all with his paintings on the wall.
I enjoyed my stay there.

A friend of mine stayed at one in San Francisco back in the '60s, and made friends with another roomer, who turned out to be Dan Hicks.
