(790 posts)Probably he's rather play newer songs, from more current work, but man, these lyrics are for right now:
American Tune
Manys the time Ive been mistaken
And many times confused
Yes, and Ive often felt forsaken
And certainly misused
Oh, but Im all right, Im all right
Im just weary to my bones
Still, you dont expect to be
Bright and bon vivant
So far away from home, so far away from home
I dont know a soul whos not been battered
I dont have a friend who feels at ease
I dont know a dream thats not been shattered
Or driven to its knees
Oh, but its all right, its all right
For lived so well so long
Still, when I think of the road
Were traveling on
I wonder what went wrong
I cant help it, I wonder whats gone wrong
And I dreamed I was dying
And I dreamed that my soul rose unexpectedly
And looking back down at me
Smiled reassuringly
And I dreamed I was flying
And high above my eyes could clearly see
The Statue of Liberty
Sailing away to sea
And I dreamed I was flying
Oh, we come on the ship they call the Mayflower
We come on the ship that sailed the moon
We come in the ages most uncertain hour
And sing an American tune
Oh, its all right, its all right
Its all right, its all right
You cant be forever blessed
Still, tomorrows going to be another working day
And Im trying to get some rest
Thats all Im trying to get some rest

(The slideshows a little distracting here, but...)

(22,977 posts)Always been my favorite and it sucked the air out of the room.
I only caught his final song last night on SNL, a very beautiful reworking of 'Bridge Over Troubled Water'.

(22,977 posts)which, of course, he did.
My eighth grade band director tried his damnedest to get us to learn/play 'Kodachrome' for a concert but it was a little beyond our capabilities.

Like he was reclaiming it away from Art. Totally different arrangement all for him, not Art. Years ago when Art was gushed over, he reacted angrily, "*I* write the songs!1" For him to select *that* song to perform says something no matter what.
Totally Tunsie
(10,885 posts)His musical accompaniment was just too off the wall for me, and his timing and spacing on BOTW was so "personalized" as to be distracting.
His first song, also, I found to be just bizarre.
I "get" that Simon enjoys shaking up his scores and accompaniment. Last night made me think back to his Graceland album, which I thought was a great success. This group, however, had too much of its own character taking up too much attention for itself and pulling me away from Simon's vocals. I don't think that was the result he was intending.
YMMV
