Watching the Voice, one of the contestants has synesthesia.

She sees music in color.

I have to take drugs to do that.

Synesthesia is a perceptual phenomenon in which stimulation of one sensory or cognitive pathway leads to automatic, involuntary experiences in a second sensory or cognitive pathway.[3][4][5][6] People who report a lifelong history of such experiences are known as synesthetes

how these young people get so good is beyond me - a 15 year old singing the blues is pretty amazing.

He has an amazing sense of pitch which some believe is somehow related to synesthesia.

Mozart's music tends to be blue, especially if it's in D major. It's darker blue if in D minor. Gabrieli and Monteverdi are generally red and gold, and French organ music, which I don't like much, runs to khaki and orange.
