The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsI love to read about psychology, spirtuality, and sometimes philosophy.
It's very peaceful for me. I've got a big overstuffed chair here and I love to sit in it and get absorbed in the deep thoughts expressed in the books I like to read. Even when I was finishing up my degree a few years back, and reading was more like work, I still remember those long hours in my big chair reading the texts with fondness. It just feels right. It feels civilized and wholesome.
I recently got some gift cards to Amazon for my birthday and went on a little used book buying spree. I got something on the environment and a few books on psychology. I also recently met a guy at work who also reads about spirituality. He gave me a book on the subject. He says that's what he does with his books after he reads them. He just gives them away to other people. That is a cool person to know. I've got a few I'm going to give him in return.
So I have all these wonderful books now to read. Probably enough to last me a couple of months. But I can't focus on them.
I'm so worried. Any amount of peace that I might have been able to muster up a few weeks ago now eludes me. I feel like I'm watching my entire society devolve into madness. And you're talking to a guy who knows a lot about madness.

I am not talking about escapism or to not be concerned.
Often I see things like today's shooting and fell I need to take a stand and yet I am a drop of water in an ocean.
I can vote and am looking forward to it but I need my time away for myself. Mindfullness meditation helps me.

(10,418 posts)I usually get in a 40 minute session every day. I'd like to be able to go two hours a day, but I often don't have the time. That is probably helping me, though. No telling how wound up I'd be without it.

(27,817 posts)He was a radio broadcasting executive who became known for his research into altered consciousness and founding "The Monroe Institute."
His 1971 book, "Journeys Out of the Body" is credited with popularizing the term
"out-of-body experience."
He wrote two more books on "OBEs"
"Far Journeys" (1985)
and "Ultimate Journey" (1994)
