family. This happened one time and I thought it would come true. A sparrow came in through an open door while she was there. She got so upset that I was afraid she would have a heart attack. She was nervous for several days after that expecting a phone call to say someone was dead.

you would get into an argument with someone.

Strange superstition, but I swear it has always been true for me.

Superstitions were abundant. A few....
Don't go out of the house, come back in and then go out again without sitting down. It invites company you don't like.
Don't rock an empty rocking chair or cradle. It invites a spirit to sit there.
Store a broom bristles up, so the bad stuff you swept up won't leak back out.
Before you walk into the woods, leave an offering for the little people or you will get lost and never come out.
Turn your shoes soles up at night so a skinwalker can't step into them.
Don't kill spiders in your house. Take the poison ones outside, leave the others alone.

My husband, who is very paranoid about locking up when we go anywhere, put some coins in the inner seal to get the latch to catch. Around this same time, I was reading a lot about feng shui. I did a speech on it in a public speaking class I was taking, so my kids had to listen to that a lot!

Years later, when my daughter bought her first house, she and her husband would put coins in the window sill because she thought it was good luck for their finances. I had to tell her that the coins in our window were for utilitarian reasons, but it is true that she and my son-in-law make a lot more money than our household does! So I guess she believed in it so it was good for her!
