(67,782 posts)...made the announcement.
At the time I lived on CPW at 82nd Street, just a half mile north of the Dakota. I must have walked past that building a hundred times, never thinking twice about John and Yoko living there, just a couple of people in NYC.
Saturday morning there was a silent vigil at the band shell in Central Park, not far from the building. It was bizarre, thousands of people standing quietly paying their respects while on the band shell was a single chair with a a portrait of John Lennon on it. A boombox in front of it played "Imagine" over and over again. The only other sounds were helicopters circling above.

(51,630 posts)I was 18 on Dec., 8, 1980 and I remember it well. I was a really big Beatles fan. I had thought of Jim Morrison on that day (it is his birthday) and was coming out of the shower in my apt on Union Sq where I was attending art school when the news broke. I wore black for a month, even on Christmas. I wore white for the memorial though. John would have wanted it that way.

(25,556 posts)They said something about the "Late John Lennon". I'm like, "What?"
Nothing more could be gleamed from the radio. Didn't hear anymore John Lennon songs. So there didn't seem to be a tribute.
Got to work, wondering if I heard this correctly.
I asked a few people at work, but they were jerks.
I didn't know anything until I got off work. I bought the paper.
