The “fire hydrant hit by car spraying water” thing is only in the movies, and only in certain parts of the western US.

Most fire hydrants are specifically designed to break away when hit.

The valve shaft has a breakable connection with the actual valve that is much deeper underground. The barrel of the hydrant is not normally filled with water.

I can't recall having seen hydrant schematics before, or thought much about what's inside them.

Thank you very much.

He said there was water spraying everywhere and they had to get the local public works agency to shut it off. As I remember, he was able to drive away and continue his journey.

That makes sense that they have breakaway shut off valves now, otherwise in the case of common domestic/fire lines, there would be no domestic water service between main line valves until it was fixed.

Some years back from the “crazy lady driving in circles at intersection” video....

Follow the fate of the fire hydrant in that one.
