Last edited Tue Jan 22, 2019, 02:32 AM - Edit history (1)
It hurts like hell every time I take a step and I can't get it out. I can feel the tweezers hit it but I can't quite find purchase to pull it out. It also starts to bleed if I mess with it. It is sooo small, I feel like a wuss, yet I can't get the damn thing out.
I tried soaking it out last night by wrapping my foot in Epsom-salt gauze and a plastic bag all night. Didn't work. I'm pretty resigned to going to the doc tomorrow and having them numb the foot to dig around until they can get it out. Any other ideas?
Thanks.
On edit/update: Saw a trauma nurse today and she dug it out. It had broken into two pieces and was deeper than I thought. The Lidocaine shot hurt so bad I actually screamed and then burst out laughing. Nurse said I did the right thing by coming in. So relieved. Thanks for the great advice everyone.

(26,260 posts)I read about this, years ago. My nephew had a similar situation so I had him try the potato poultice and it worked to draw out the sliver.

(26,260 posts)but I don't remember how deep it was. I think oat meal has some drawing properties, too. And I just read about something else that really works, but DAMN, I can't remember what it was. If I can find it, I'll send it your way.
It's unfortunate that glass doesn't usually set up the kind of swelling and, well, pus that lubricates things like wood splinters to push out.

(16,377 posts)Gross but true.

(26,260 posts)I wear gardening gloves, most of the time but sometimes I am too lazy to look for them. I finally bought a big magnifier on a stand so that I can hone in with tweezers.

(16,377 posts)My eyes are pretty good, especially for my age, although a magnifying glass would come in handy for this one.

Over the counter, no prescription.

(16,377 posts)I'll try one and then the other if no luck.

Maybe it will be come a meme! "Pick some up with a potato."

(10,749 posts)Also, when you hobble down to rite aid, Aldo pick up those blister bandaids. Again, that will keep it moist.

(16,377 posts)Dr. Scholl's makes them. It may help me walk until I can get this thing out.

(5,931 posts)pick away from the glass sideways to widen the hole, only pick at dead skin, don't go slicing live skin.

(16,377 posts)Plus, it's so small I feel it when I hit it, but I can't see it. Thx for suggestion, though.

(17,276 posts)It might be a matter of what angle they look at it. I did this for my husband's foot recently. Small shard of glass in the ball of his foot. I had a tweezers with a very sharp tip and got a good look at it in a sunny window. Poked around and could feel it but not get it for a while. Then suddenly it did pop out. It was very small but I could tell it was glass.
Good luck!

(7,397 posts)chance of infection. I would maybe give it another day to work itself out and then give the doc a try. Meanwhile there may be some type of drawing salve at your pharmacy that you could leave on overnight.

(86,577 posts)Sometimes, when I get a splinter which is often, a piece of duct tape can do the trick. Just lay it over the spot, smooth it down to make contact with the splinter then pull up a little quickly. sometimes you have to keep trying and sometimes it doesn't work but it often does.

(4,429 posts)next time I encounter this problem. TBH, usually, I just let it alone and it goes away. But this sounds much better.

(20,868 posts)You need to have that removed! It can travel into a vein and move to your heart and kill you!
I had a half of a needle embedded in my grand toe years ago. I went to the hospital with my mother and she did not want to wait for 8 hrs. so we decided to go home. When I got into her huge heavy car, I hit the toe on the side of the door rim and wowza, it hurt bad but the needle popped out and she grabbed it. End of that story.
Seems you won't be so lucky is my thought so deal with it! Please! You don't need a big infection or cellulitis setting in!

(17,647 posts)I had the same and even with my foot right in front of him, with bright spotlight and a giant magnifier, it took a lot to get it out.
Walking, often under appreciated.
Yeah, I tried drawing salve, soaks, etc. its a small piece of glass but it has got to go. A good podiatrist will have all the tools and skills to deal with it for you. It does hurt but just for a little while, and of course it hurts now too.
Good luck.

(16,377 posts)I'm walking on the side of my foot now and it's really getting sore. This whole thing is just so stupid. Such a tiny thing causing so much hassle.

(537 posts)and hurt every time you walk.
Sterilize your tools and douse the area with hydrogen peroxide. Then bite the bullet and carefully start digging it out, keep dripping H2O2 on it periodically while working. Take your time. Deep breaths.
It helps to have some very sharp pointy tweezers.
That is what I do, anyway. Good luck.
Laffy Kat
(16,377 posts)She's got some topical lidocaine. Might try that, too. I have a high pain tolerance, the problem is more the bleeding obscures my focus and I can't see what I'm doing.
Totally Tunsie
(10,885 posts)That needs to come out before getting further embedded in your foot.
In any event, hope it's remedied soon. That must be very painful.
Laffy Kat
(16,377 posts)They won't reimburse for that. I'll go to doc in a.m. if it's still there. It will be a zero copay for me.

(2,343 posts)like that several years back. I got a tiny sliver of glass stuck in my foot and could not get it out. Eventually i stopped noticing it. A little more than a year later, my foot fell off.
Just kidding. But the tiny sliver of glass did come out one night while i was sitting on my couch watching t.v. It was weird. It had been more than a year and i guess it just worked itself out.
Laffy Kat
(16,377 posts)And I would totally put up with the discomfort if it was any place else on my foot.

(13,895 posts)The iodine acted as a dye so you can see where it is.. Then get it with fine nose tweezers and pull in the direction it went in, not against the "grain".
Black salve works for me also but takes some time.. Best bet is to get someone to dig it out for you with a magnifying glass.. If that does not work, go to the doc... YMMV works for me..

(23,656 posts)You certainly got a lot of suggestions. Did any work or did you go to a emergency clinic?
Laffy Kat
(16,377 posts)No luck. I have an appointment with a trauma NP at 1:00 today. I feel stupid for having to go in for this but I don't know what else to do. The appointment is right upstairs from where I work and right before my shift starts, so it's convenient and I'm looking forward to removing this annoyance!
Thanks for asking

(130,891 posts)Our next-door neighbor was a physician, so the myriad 'issues' such as you describe were addressed by her, and she correctly told me to go to the ER when it was appropriate!
Good Luck!

(16,377 posts)It's also just a $10 co-pay so why not? I'd pay $100 to get the darn thing out, LOL.
