Tiny sliver of glass stuck in ball of foot. UPDATE: It's out! YAY!

Last edited Tue Jan 22, 2019, 02:32 AM - Edit history (1)

It hurts like hell every time I take a step and I can't get it out. I can feel the tweezers hit it but I can't quite find purchase to pull it out. It also starts to bleed if I mess with it. It is sooo small, I feel like a wuss, yet I can't get the damn thing out.

I tried soaking it out last night by wrapping my foot in Epsom-salt gauze and a plastic bag all night. Didn't work. I'm pretty resigned to going to the doc tomorrow and having them numb the foot to dig around until they can get it out. Any other ideas?

Thanks.

On edit/update: Saw a trauma nurse today and she dug it out. It had broken into two pieces and was deeper than I thought. The Lidocaine shot hurt so bad I actually screamed and then burst out laughing. Nurse said I did the right thing by coming in. So relieved. Thanks for the great advice everyone.

but I don't remember how deep it was. I think oat meal has some drawing properties, too. And I just read about something else that really works, but DAMN, I can't remember what it was. If I can find it, I'll send it your way.

It's unfortunate that glass doesn't usually set up the kind of swelling and, well, pus that lubricates things like wood splinters to push out.

Sun Jan 20, 2019, 03:31 PM

It might be a matter of what angle they look at it. I did this for my husband's foot recently. Small shard of glass in the ball of his foot. I had a tweezers with a very sharp tip and got a good look at it in a sunny window. Poked around and could feel it but not get it for a while. Then suddenly it did pop out. It was very small but I could tell it was glass.

Good luck!

Sometimes, when I get a splinter which is often, a piece of duct tape can do the trick. Just lay it over the spot, smooth it down to make contact with the splinter then pull up a little quickly. sometimes you have to keep trying and sometimes it doesn't work but it often does.

You need to have that removed! It can travel into a vein and move to your heart and kill you!

I had a half of a needle embedded in my grand toe years ago. I went to the hospital with my mother and she did not want to wait for 8 hrs. so we decided to go home. When I got into her huge heavy car, I hit the toe on the side of the door rim and wowza, it hurt bad but the needle popped out and she grabbed it. End of that story.

Seems you won't be so lucky is my thought so deal with it! Please! You don't need a big infection or cellulitis setting in!

I had the same and even with my foot right in front of him, with bright spotlight and a giant magnifier, it took a lot to get it out.

Walking, often under appreciated.

Yeah, I tried drawing salve, soaks, etc. it’s a small piece of glass but it has got to go. A good podiatrist will have all the tools and skills to deal with it for you. It does hurt but just for a little while, and of course it hurts now too.

Good luck.

and hurt every time you walk.

Sterilize your tools and douse the area with hydrogen peroxide. Then bite the bullet and carefully start digging it out, keep dripping H2O2 on it periodically while working. Take your time. Deep breaths.

It helps to have some very sharp pointy tweezers.

That is what I do, anyway. Good luck.

like that several years back. I got a tiny sliver of glass stuck in my foot and could not get it out. Eventually i stopped noticing it. A little more than a year later, my foot fell off.

Just kidding. But the tiny sliver of glass did come out one night while i was sitting on my couch watching t.v. It was weird. It had been more than a year and i guess it just worked itself out.

The iodine acted as a dye so you can see where it is.. Then get it with fine nose tweezers and pull in the direction it went in, not against the "grain".
Black salve works for me also but takes some time.. Best bet is to get someone to dig it out for you with a magnifying glass.. If that does not work, go to the doc... YMMV works for me..
