(7,447 posts)They should simply play one quarter at a time, at least in the playoffs. Whomever is ahead at the end of it wins.
If it's tied, you do another overtime.
If you want to make it go more quickly, require all extra points be going for two.

(4,858 posts)...yes, politics is a deadly serious business. But it is also, in some respects, a sport to the American people, and always has been. (Read an account of the 1840 election sometime.) And inasmuch as it *can* be regarded as a sporting event, the cheating and blatant violation of the spirit of the rules, in 2000, was even worse than the NFL's overtime set-up.

(6,390 posts)After another quarter and no winner...have a field goal competition, keep everyone on there trying to block and protect the kicker. But start off at 10 yards...then make it progressively longer until one misses. If they both miss, then keep it there until one makes it.
Watch the kicker's salary jump up significantly.

(1,568 posts)I just dont like how the randomness of a coin toss can contribute so much to a win or loss. Thats nuts, especially considering the $$$$ at stake.

(6,390 posts)...the guy breaking away from everyone else with the puck and its him vs. the goalie....is very exciting.
When it goes to overtime and its shooter vs. goalie....oh man, that few seconds of hockey player skating down the rink with a puck, trying to play mind games with the goalie...and he in return is trying not to fall for it and focus on the puck...seems like an eternity.
It may seem random, but remember, in hockey, a goalie blocks hundreds of shots...often with the assistance of his team...this shows his true skill. And the players taking shots are lined up according to their skill and strategy.
So with that said, a good kicker will be valued...likewise, you want people who can break through a line to block him....and a good line to protect your kicker. The way it is now, its pretty routine, get within a certain distance you know the kicker can make it....every once in a great while, you get a situation where it might be in his range...and sometimes they succeed, other times they don't. But ironically, its the rare times that make the game really interesting.

(38,556 posts)A shoot-out is not used in playoff games?
(That's how I remember it.)

(6,390 posts)Only during the regular season. I was throwing out an idea for football, you still have the teams on the field trying to block the kicks. Plus, probably a lot less hard possible concussion type hits.

(50,557 posts)I'm sorry, but "the Super Bowl was decided on penalty kicks" is too depressing to think about.
If the NFL would get rid of "if a team scores on the first possession of OT, they win the game" rule and just play for 10 minutes, it would be great.
The Figment
(494 posts)The "Green,White, Checkers" rule is a total joke, not to mention "Staged Racing" and the new fangled way of qualifying!

(43,182 posts)I'm sorry, but placing the ball on the opposing team's 25 yard line sucks all the drama out of it.
I like seeing winning drives down the field. College football eliminates that excitement.
I hate that we're stuck with the Patriots in the Super Bowl yet again, but I'm fine with the NFL overtime setup with the modifications they've made a few years ago (each team gets at least one possession unless the first team actually gets into the endzone.)
That all said, baseball is still the greatest of all team sports, period.

(23,226 posts)After twelve draws in a row between defending champion Magnus Carlsen and American challenger Fabiano Caruana, November's world championship match was decided by a short series of blitz games. It was ridiculous.
