I was able to do it without having to physically go to the DMV the last 2 times. Now I have to go and get an eye test and a written test. I've been doing all the Sample Classes on the DMV website so I'm good with that. My vision is still good. Anything else I need to know? I would be devastated if I couldn't renew my license for some reason.

(73 posts)Did you let it lapse?
I cant imagine why a state would make you retake the written.
Several years ago, I moved to Illinois. I wasnt planning on getting my IL license since I was supposed to live there only a year. But, my AR license was expiring, so I had to get the IL one. I didnt know I had to take the written and didnt find out until I got to the DMV. I took it on the fly, and it was incredibly basic and I passed easily. Maybe your test will be the same!

(149,648 posts)I think it may be required after so many years (not sure how many). I knew in advance and did well.

(37,648 posts)But it's pretty easy. It's mainly common sense rules of the road that you've been driving under for years. Turn your blinker on when pulling out from a parallel park into the street, what the road signs with pics mean...and I forget what they ask you.
Wear a dark shirt for the pic. White doesn't photograph well.
It should be easy, since your vision is good.
Just have all your paperwork, whatever they require. Cert copy of birth certificate? Proof of insurance for the car you're driving, maybe? Something with proof of your address?
Good luck!

(14,492 posts)Download a copy of your state's Drivers Manual and review it. I found ours on the Kentucky State Police web site and it's around 75 pages including all the typical fluff. I went to the Kentucky DMV web site first but was directed to the KSP site for the book.
Might be worth at least a cursory review for your written test...... .....Good luck!.......

(1,850 posts)I had to go in person this year as well. Didnt mind because the pix on my license was laughably ancient. No written test, just eye test and new photo.
Suggestion: in Colorado you can get online and make an appointment for a simple renewal. Showed up on time and I zipped to the front of the queue and was done in five minutes. Felt sorry for the others there! Seemed like the people running the place hardly ever see someone that had made an appointment. Hopefully you have similar options in your state!
Oh, and be sure and bring your old license and proof of residency as needed. Looking up what docs they wanted in the first place is why I tripped over the ability to make an appointment.
