Our brain composes the image based on input from the eyes and then error corrects for how it thinks it "ought" to look, which is why we're fooled.

At one point I had the first image as my avatar here. I simply cannot force myself to see the two squares as the same colour, even though I used an RGB picker to verify that they were indeed the same colour.
