They’re laughing through the frozen tears.

Those of you on the West Coast might not understand ...

My family & friends in the Midwest right now. 🥶 #polarvortex #thefreezing

... but the Midwest is in a world of arctic hurt as the coldest weather in decades — think wind chills of 60-some degrees below zero — settles over the region.

Yes, it’s reached frozen-toilet levels up north.

It's soooo cold! how cold is it? it's sooo cold that this is happening!

'twould be a good night to use the chamber pot.

If anyone is curious what's happening in this picture, decomposing human waste is warm. The steam rises up and freezes around the head of the toilet.

Never had a toilet do that, but the valve on the toilet in our downstairs powder room will freeze when it's real cold. We use a hair drier to thaw it out.

We have a walkout split level, and the lower floor sits on the concrete slab. When they built the house in 1979, they ran the fill line to the toilet from the laundry room next door. Instead of running it through the ceiling, and down the interior wall of the powder room, they ran it through the outside wall. It's insulated, but it will still freeze.

I was living with another guy who was working part time and going to college part time. Although I could shoulder my half of the rent and utilities easily, Paul couldn't, so we kept the heat turned way way down to economize. One morning during a cold snap, Paul had to bust through a thin layer of ice in the toilet bowl before he could take his morning whiz. Wasn't anything like the toilet in the tweet, but at that point, I told him to turn on the heat, and I'd cover whatever he couldn't.

Their ice breakers, while used for essential movements, won't be getting there anytime soon.
