i posted the main info in the pets forum. magik, still is having great difficulty urinating. i'm researching how to manually express a male cats bladder, if he cannot resume urinating on his own, we will have to make some sad and hard decisions. ms wonderful, my partner, is his chosen person. she will be very upset. majiks' mother, mojo will be upset too, and of course, i'd rather he not leave for the rainbow bridge so soon. thanks irisblue

Probably there is something in the archives or files re this subject too.
Good luck! Hugs, prayers and vibes for your kitty, majik.

(30,994 posts)Crystals form in the urethra of male cats, (and some females) and it is a fatal condition unless treated ASAP.
I cannot stress this too much.
Your cat needs serious help. Now.
It can be cured but it will be expensive.

(33,018 posts)he started complaining, loudly and while looking directly at me on friday am. off to vet... pain meds, urinalysis, xrays showing a left kidney stone. saturday afternoon, no urine output for 24 hours, so back to the vet. follow ups , stone really isn't moving, blood and urine look fine, higher test pain meds. 24 more hours, still no urine output, litter pan dry. off we go for the 3rd visit. oh yeah, i know this could be serious

(7,875 posts)If you wait until he can't pass any urine at all, there's a very good chance it will be too late.
In my family we've had this happen with two cats. We lost one (he was 3 years old) the other one was lucky, but he went through a very painful recovery and now has to eat a special diet.
On edit- I didn't read the whole sub-thread. It sounds like you may have a different problem, but just to be on the safe side, check the labels on the cat food you buy. If there is more than 3% ash, it can lead to urinary blockage, and males are particularly susceptible.
And vibes for your cat- hope he pulls through.

(33,018 posts)the er vet taught us how to manually express majiks bladder. the vet seemed happy we wanted to learn how to do this. it was easier then i would have guessed. it works best for him and therefore me when he's had his high test cat pain meds an hour before we start & he looks really stoned. we're gonna keep doing this until what ever is keeping his bladder in spasm stops causing the problem. we did change his food, so i hope it happens soon. every 6 to 8 hrs for the next several days. big paw prints in my heart.

(118,758 posts)he had crystals blocking his urethra. They operated. He was fine for years afterwards. My brother went on vacation and his roomate noticed the cat wasn't urinating, or unrinating in the wrong place and left it a week. It was too late. Just as we were about to bring the cat to the vet he died. This is a serious issue for male cats.

(33,018 posts)the vet thinks he's having bladder spasms since the 2 urinalysis haven't show crystals so far. thanks for being concerned, i know you have cats, and we do get worried about them.

(33,018 posts)and i'm soo happy. i bet majik is too.....it couldn't haven't been too much fun to have me trap him, medicate him, then an hour later, squeeze the urine out of him. thanks for the vibes and good wishes, and as MFM stated he's "i.p. freely" again.
