I am a basketball nut and it is that time of year. Thanks to our TV set up, I can watch many HS tournaments.
Last week I watched Indiana and Illinois girls. This weekend will be Iowa and part 2 of Illinois.
Why do some high schools call their girl's teams the "Lady " whatevers or add an "ette" to the end of the boys team name.
For example I just watched a game between the "Bravettes" and the "Cougarettes." Last week included the "Lady Shoes." Growing up I remember tens such as the "Bull-ettes" and the "Lady Bulls."
Just had to get that off my chest - back to kitty pics.

(17,296 posts)These young women are every bit as much cougars, or mustangs, or buffaloes or badgers as their male counterparts!

(27,813 posts)They're also kind of quaint, and I think that's a good fit for amateur athletics. Though I admit, I laughed my head off when I first moved to Seattle and heard them referring to women on the UW teams as the "Husky Women". Cracked me up for years.....

(10,885 posts)If "Redskins" can be a controversial name considered to be racist, these "lady names" surely must be misogynistic and sexist.
That's a very astute observation. Kudos to you!
