What do you do when your diabetic dog's blood sugar is over 350 on an empty stomach?

Help!!! I'm having an awful time with my pup, Jack, who has type 1 diabetes. He crashed (44) before 11am this morning, so I gave him Karo syrup and I might've tested too soon - it read 115. We took a nap and I re-tested him around 4pm and he was a 378 (5 hrs after the Karo syrup) so I gave him his normal insulin regimen of 13mL about an hr and a half earlier than I normally do. I re-tested and it was at 357.

This is the first time, since he was diagnosed almost 2 yrs ago, that this has happened.

What do I do now?

Take him to an emergency vet nt spooky3 Mar 2019 #1
this or try to contact your veterinarian. Your vet likely has conducted a glucose curve and thus hlthe2b Mar 2019 #3

knows what response to expect and whether or not your dog responds as expected to the type of insulin you have him on.

If you can't reach them, the safest thing is going to be to go to the emergency clinic, despite it being costly.
Then, I'd suggest you schedule an in-depth counseling session with your regular vet to discuss what to do in various scenarios with your dog, based on his prior reactions and how well he is regulated. A fructosamine test can help with that.

Good luck!

I called them first, and described everything to them. They said to bring him in at 8pm (ET).

Despite the high blood sugar, he's walking eating and normally (that's why they slotted him for 8pm).

I'll keep you posted. And Thank You DU - we've had a terrible day...

....and drink lots of water to dilute the blood.

That's about the only home remedy aside from a bit of HIGH protein snack. Peanut butter, or cheese for example.

That may be why they want you to wait until 8 to come in. You might want to recheck his blood glucose level before you take him in. It may already be coming down.

It was going down - I was just concerned it wasn't going down fast enough.

I'm going to test him before we leave (it's a 45 min ride) since he's acting perfectly normal now. If I could wait for him to see his normal vet, I'd prefer that. Thank you for the help!!
