Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsOK!! Got my FOURTH spoofing call today!!
The no-call list seemed to work, but now that you can't tell who's calling we're down the rabbit hole. I recall seeing articles about this, back before we were affected. To whom do I complain? Where do I give my support?
In case there's anyone left who hasn't been swept up in this, a spoofing call is one where the displayed number is something that makes you want to answer, like your home town, or the next big city. And NOT something that you can report.

(14,838 posts)How do I know? I've gotten calls from my own number, as well as from my wifes number (cell phone numbers). We've also gotten spam calls from a town hall number and various businesses.
This HAS to be illegal. Why isn't anyone looking at it?

(60,010 posts)Fortunately we don't get a lot of calls, the line is mostly for outgoing.
Last call I got was yesterday, warning me Soc Sec. is gonna stop coming unless I call a long distance direct number..not an 800 number, this one would have charged for the call.
Which is the scam, no doubt.

(1,266 posts)I get four calls before lunchtime on my landline. A typical day brings about five on my cell phone and ten on my landline.
I dont answer unless I recognize the caller. Especially with spoofing using your phone numbers prefix so you think its local.

(12,344 posts)Supposedly the phone companies are working on a fix that will be ready in a year or so.
The only thing to do is don't answer the phone if you don't recognize the number. Answering just tells them it's a good number. If it's somebody legit, they will leave a voicemail.

(34,138 posts)If it is a robocall, I cuss and insult it until it disconnects. I don't hang up, just yell stupid obscene insults at the voice to tie up their line as long as possible. I do NOT push any buttons.
If it's a live person selling stuff, I jerk them around. For a call selling vehicle extended warranties I refuse to give or confirm any information: Them "We're calling about your Prius." Me "Which Prius? We have more than one." Them "The 2013 Prius." Me "Which one, we have several of those." I keep that up and contradict myself until they hang up.
For Medicare stuff - Them "We're going to send you a brace for free." Me "Why? I don't need a brace." Them "A brace for your pain." Me "I have no pain. I don't hurt anywhere. Take my name off your list and don't call me again."
For funeral plans - Them "We're offering discounted plans." Me "Why are you bothering me when my mother just died?" (Alternative - Me "I don't need a funeral plan - I'm going to live forever!"
For Microsoft Technical Support (or whatever version they have changed to) I keep a nice loud whistle next to the phone. They don't like that at all.

(32,777 posts)... everything goes to voicemail and my friends all know it. I do have NoMoRobo and it works very well. However these fake number spoofs fool it and NoMoRobo lets the call through. Answering the call is a mistake because not only is it spam, but you just went on their suckers list.
Anybody I would want to talk to has their name displayed on my Caller ID, and everything else gets ignored.
