The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsMy bro lost his job last month. This month it was my turn.
I'm still alive, but also still eating/running from my feelings more than I want to be. Couldn't afford the counselor anymore for my anxiety/eating disorder/bipolar, but that's now a moot point as the elimination of my job means even less money (ie mortgage payment) and no more insurance for health care. And hubby's business is still floundering, a victim of a tough economy and transitioning technologies. But on the plus side, the family and kitties are mostly healthy, and we still have a roof over our heads.
I'm scrambling to get a resume and portfolio together. Though I am not letting myself feel it, I am terribly sad to leave my school and adorable kids. I fear not finding a new position in a school nearby (as you recall, I don't drive) almost as much as I fear landing a job and not being good enough for it. At any rate, there's a lot of fear going on here. And cookie baking. Lots and lots of it.
Anyway, thanks for letting me vent. I may be mostly a lurker these days, but after all these years I still consider DU to be my online community.

(28,845 posts)Dont know if it still applies in the new world order, but it helped me....
When you look for a new job, a few things will happen...
You may find a job worse than the one you lost.
You may find a job as good as the job you lost.
You may find a job better than the job you lost.
Thats a 2/3s chance youll find a job as good as or better than the job you lost.
Thats pretty good odds.
Good Luck. 🍀

(42,641 posts)but Costco is hiring in April, and the USPS is hiring throughout the year.
Costco pays $15 an hour, the USPS pays approximately $17 per hour.
Good luck with the search.

(22,745 posts)They want me to stay on until the end of the month. Which would be strange, knowing I'm history. But I have two weeks vacation, so I'm calling in tomorrow and letting them know I'm using it. They'll be pissed and try to pull something, I'm sure. It'll allow me time to update my portfolio and start making calls.

I got laid off twice and was rehired right away because of my experience. Be sure to get good recommendations if you can.

(3,598 posts)can you get onto a plan via the national or your state exchange? Losing insurance due to the loss of a job is a qualifying event.

Maybe Green could tutor kids or work with home schooled kids or substitute until a permanent position is found.

(9,426 posts)you "may not be good enough for a job" Show them what a great choice they made, hiring you. Be the best worker you can be, pitch in enthusiastically. All your life's experiences combined to make you who you are. Put on a smile, and go out there. Good luck. Whoever lands you will be getting a gem, show them that.

(1,306 posts)August 31, 2018 I was walked out of the job that I have had for the past 21 years (almost to the day). I worked for one of the BIG Insurance companies, that just switched CEO's 5 years ago, as a Systems Analyst, and for some unknown reason the new CEO decided 2018 was a great year to cut investment in the systems department. Over a thousand were cut from that department. I was one.
It took 6 months, because of a glut of talent in the marketplace, and was the hardest thing I've ever been through in my life (and our house burned down taking *everything* my family ever owned with it 6 years ago) but I finally found another job. It pays $20,000 less than I was making, setting me back by a decade, but it has better benefits than the job I left (seriously, my first year I'll get more PTO than I was getting in a year at the old job after 20 years!) and a PENSION (which I thought I'd never have again)
It took so long because,
1) I'm 50.
B. My only Systems job has been at the insurance company, I'm entirely self-taught, and the "technical interviews" given by 99% of employers are biased against the self-taught, and older, programmers.
III - I'm not a very good interview.
6 months of fighting, not sleeping, depression and no healthcare has taken a serious toll, though. I could not get motivated to exercise (I do DDPYoga of all things) so I gained 30 lbs, and I look like I've aged about 20 years.
I sent out over 350 resumes, and interviewed so many times I've lost count (dozens, there were weeks I had at least one interview every day). The vast majority of them gave me the feedback "the interview went well, but... " followed by informing me there was another candidate that had some obscure experience in a tool or software that I've never even heard of... so they hired that person instead.
I filed the check-in for my very last unemployment check an hour before I received the email informing me of the job offer. And, I've still got 1/2 my severance money left (which wasn't as much as it should be IMO, but at least it'll help augment my new salary for a few years. I hope.
But, at least I won't be losing my house. (We got to build our dream house to replace the one that was destroyed, so losing that would have been devastating) I may not be able to eat every night, but I won't lose the house.

(595 posts)a while back when being unemployed is be kind to yourself. Take time to relax a few minutes a day and just breathe... job hunting is stressful and you are in a position that many of us have been through and through no fault of our own.
best wishes as you begin your search! things will turn for the better!!

(74 posts)Don't forget the huge need for reliable, honest pet sitters. If you have kitties, this may be a side job (or even a full time one!) for you. I had a good many clients in Nashville TN when I lived there. I did not have to advertise. It was just word of mouth. Most were professional people - attorneys and such. Having had back surgery, I wasn't able to walk dogs but my clients were fine with that. Just a thought. Wishing you and the kitties all the best.
