When we were married, my wife and I had two dogs. Wally loved my wife, and Ellie loved me. When we separated, I took Ellie and she took Wally. That was last summer. Everything seemed fine until this past Saturday. A package of mine was sent to my old address, so I needed to visit my ex. She ended up forcing me to take Wally. With my new living conditions, there was absolutely no way to keep him. And I promise you that I thought of everything. It just wasn't going to work. So, I surrendered him to the same rescue I got him from ten years ago when he was only 7 months old. While we were waiting for the woman to come pick him up, I gave him a goodbye petting. He started licking my hand. Then he was taken away forever.

(17,984 posts)He was with a foster mom. She explained that they found him roaming the highways of Kansas. He was undernourished and had an extended belly. He looked like a wallaby, so they named him "Wally". That name suited him to a tee. Today, when the woman was picking him up, she commented on how his eyes had gone hazy. "That's common in old dogs," she said. He's an old dog that I adopted as a tiny puppy, and I'm giving him up! I feel so miserable!

(11,686 posts)gotten from a rescue 2 and a half years before. Divorce and work with his speacial needs could not work. I cried for days. To make it worse my emotional support cat went into a depression and was no help to me. He went back to the same rescue and about 5 months later he was adopted by an elderly couple with a small farm as the only dog and no children wich for him was good.

(17,305 posts)It was a truly awful day. You never know about the fate of your dog for sure after that, but you can be assured the ASPCA/Humane Society will do their best to find a good match.
Years after that happened, my wife and I were in a position to get a dog again. We adopted from a shelter a few hours drive away and he's the best dog we've ever had. Sometimes life balances things out.
