(16,381 posts)Stanley Hotel "Spirit Tour" where we learned all about the ghostly goings-on at the property. I'm not truly a believer, but I enjoyed the Colorado history lesson. I stayed up there years ago with a friend and we didn't experience anything other-worldly. It's a beautiful place and I promised my sister we'd go back up for a night when she came back. She's returning next month, so I might have an update soon!

(6,709 posts)True, the story was set there, but the exterior shots were of a different place, the Timberline Lodge, in Mt. Hood, Oregon. Interiors were also shot elsewhere.

(50,557 posts)I looked up where this place is and it needs no "winter caretaker" - it's in town. Given that, it would be very productive to be holed up somewhere for six months.

(32,639 posts)... so we see it played out in his eyes and it's a very different scenario. I'm one of those who read the book first, and loved it. Needless to say, the movie was a disappointment to me. Stanley Kubrick made his movie all about Jack Nicholson (the father), and the story of Danny the little boy got sidetracked.

(50,557 posts)The only actor out there who could have played Jack Torrance is Nicholson. The movie-going audience wouldnt accept a Nicholson movie with him in a minor role.

(50,383 posts)Only the exterior was used in the movie, and it looks like they remodeled it since then.
I believe the interiors were filmed on a set made to look like a hotel, so no reason for heeby jeebies!

(16,381 posts)Again, I'm not a believer, but the supernatural reputation of the Stanely has a much longer history than the movie.

(50,557 posts)According to http://www.movie-locations.com/movies/s/Shining-1980.php, the exterior of the hotel used in the movie is the Timberline Lodge in Oregon. The interior sets were done on a soundstage in England, and the maze was done at a different theater in England.
Laffy Kat
(16,381 posts)I don't know if it was missed in editing or what, but when the scene goes to an aerial shot to show the entire Overlook property, the maze is not included. Perhaps it was "overlooked."

(But the Griswold Inn is beautiful and quaint!)

(102,281 posts)I was there for a small working conference and only about half those to attend, got there. So, we got the run of the place since it was mostly closed down for inter-season renovations.
Let's just say there were lots of hiding places, dumbwaiters and other little nooks and crannies that make it obvious why King was "inspired"...
No, I didn't see any paranormal anything, but it was certainly ripe for imagination.

A nice young couple fled after midnight once, having been awakened and disturbed by what they said was a ghost looking for french fries.
After they departed, I took a look. All I found was a bunch of dishes in the sink and a couple of empty ketchup packets.

(63,221 posts)Just not in the "haunted" or "SPIRITED" ROOMS. "The Stanley Hotel features a variety of rooms with high paranormal activity including the famous Stephen King Suite 217, the Ghost Hunters' favorite room 401, as well as 407, and 428. These are among our most-requested rooms, availability is limited."
I actually think the outside is more creepy looking than the inside (and I know the outside of the hotel was not used in the film). For some reason, I am not that fond of the landscape.

(23,995 posts)... in Daytona Beach, Florida. It was reputed to be haunted. He and one of his team mates were heading back to their room one night, rather late, from one of the bars in the lowest level.
After they got in the elevator, they heard the voice of what sounded like a younng girl calling, "Wait for me," and they heard footsteps. They looked out into the hallway, and there was no one there. Then, they felt the temperature n the elevator drop by about 20 degrees. They found it rather freaky, and intriguing.
