(At least that was the all-purpose explanation my hubby and I came up with for some of our cats' behavior.)

We had a cat that would come up on the porch and lie down in the middle of a big asparagus fern. He was smashing it. We'd chase him off, but he would return the next day.

When we do a quick teardown of a wheel, we cut the spokes to save time and energy. The cut ends of the spokes are somewhat sharp. So I took a hand full and stuck them in the fern. When the cat arrived, he climbed into the fern and attempted to lie down. He'd get half way down and stop, try again and give up. He looked puzzled. By the second day he gave up and snoozed on the porch next to the fern.

The fern never returned to its past glory.
