OH, NO! My pretty ankles are swollen! I am desolate...

For all these years I have been vain about my nice slender ankles. Now in my late 70s they are slightly swollen. AGH!

I guess this comes with age. I certainly feel fine.

Oh well, we all get old if we live long enough....

of congestive heart failure. Before the cause was understood, the common term was dropsy.

Have it checked out.

The inefficiency in the heart causes fluid buildup somewhere, often the legs or lungs, due to an inability to properly pump the blood.

to prevent blood clots and swelling and drink lots of water

When I sit too long in a seat which cuts across the back of my thighs, my feet will darken and become puffy because the blood isn't pumping back up properly (my Blood Pressure is quite low) A few minutes with my feet up and I'm good to go.

My feet swelled during my 9th month of pregnancy when I took a 4 hour trip in the car. When I woke up in the morning they were fine.

for heart health which also helps deter or reduce swelling in my ankles:

While lying in bed, first bring knees up to chest as far as you can then straighten out legs and start the exercise by bringing toes of one foot up while with the other foot extend as though stepping on a gas pedal and at a moderate pace alternate so that your feet are constantly in motion in this way to the count of (work up to in the beginning) about fifty repetitions.

That is helpful as a maintenance type thing but you should get it checked out as it indicates health problems.

Depends on the cause.
