The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsOur Haus is a very, very, very, very, very fine Haus
The castle out in back of our house in Germany is called the Haus zum Haus. A local resident made up a website for a virtual tour.
This is not a castle like Versailles or Windsor, but a small one from the 10th century that was built up for local use over 7 centuries. In case you don't make it over to our part of Germany this year, here's a tour:

(149,627 posts)I greatly enjoyed walking around in it, all over the grounds, seeing the lovely sights. Here's a sample photo:

(5,018 posts)this Schloss had been converted to apartments: https://www.schlossberlepsch.de/index.html
For a very short time we lived in the tower apartment while my dad was at the Max Planke Institute in Gottingen (until the whole family got there and we needed more space). Baron von Berlepsch was a character complete with an eye patch and a stiff leg - probably a WWII vet.

(32,641 posts)It seems the photos must have been taken in the early summer because everything is blooming, including the nice geraniums. Are there any interior scenes? I can only see the exterior, but really that is enough.
People should realize they can zoom in tighter by scrolling with the mouse wheel. Click on the white circles to go to the next scene. Use your mouse to scan left, right, up and down to view the scenes.
Thanks DFW!
Edited to add: Click on the word "Grundriss" on the bottom of the photo to see the property layout and positions for all the photos.

(63,221 posts)Such a pretty area! That is one of the things that I miss about Europe, so many old places have been preserved for people to enjoy.

(54,399 posts)It has served as a fortress/weapons depot in more than one war, and has been smashed up a few times over the centuries. But it is beautifully restored now. The post-war ruins were sold for a song to a wealthy architect with the proviso that he do the restoration. He did, and his studio is still on the grounds (behind the statue of the man sitting on the bench of the courtyard).

(23,350 posts)I dunno, it just doesn't rhyme very well.
So, do they serve beer? I seem to remember that Germany had decent beer, but memory is funny after fifty years.

(54,399 posts)There is a family of peacocks that lives in the courtyard, and they are ornery if pissed off. I think it would take more than just two cats to match their ferocity.
This being Germany, I certainly assume that they serve beer. I can't stand the taste of beer, so, since I never order it, I couldn't tell you for sure if they serve it or not.
