Cats have mastered the doorknob principle. Quick! Get them to sign a doorknob non-proliferation treaty! If they pass this information to dogs, human preeminence is doomed!

If I'm in the bathroom and the doorknob rattles I know it's him, trying to get in. The other two try to get in by sticking their paws under the door and clawing the paint off.

No special training whatsoever, no commands and treat-rewards, etc.

They watch you, and eventually figure out how things work.
